2002 NJCL CONVENTION @ University of Kentucky, Kentucky

In the Summer of 2002, the National JCL Convention was held at The University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky during the week of July 30th through August 4th. Massachusetts arrived at the National Convention a day early. This extra day allowed us to settle down, unpack, and get some rest.

This convention was full of many activities from graphic arts registration to the competitive certamen matches. Some delegates hung out with their friends in the lounges, while others might have attended the interesting workshops and seminars. The days passed by so quickly, you don't know whether the convention lasted for a week or for just a few days.

Massachusetts did extremely well at this convention. Our delegates were able to show to everyone that Massachusetts is among the best. To begin with, our certamen teams shocked everyone when all three of our levels made it to the semi-finals. The novice team did so well that they were able to make it to the finals, in which they competed with states like Ohio and Florida. Our standings were as follows: Novice Team placed 3rd, Lower Team placed 6th, Upper Team also placed 6th.

On Saturday, during the last General Assembly, many of our delegates were recognized for their overall achievements. Alexander Kopynec of Mount Greylock Regional HS placed 7th overall in creative arts. Amanda Luong of Boston Latin Academy placed 4th overall in graphic arts and she also received a trophy for 10th overall in the whole convention. Isaac Meister of Boston Latin School placed 5th overall in academic tests, 8th overall in creative arts, and 9th overall in the whole convention. Yiting Jin, also of Boston Latin School, placed 9th overall in academic tests, 1st overall in creative arts, and 4th overall in the whole convention. Yiting also received a plaque for 4th place in the Lillie B. Hamilton Award. Massachusetts also did very well in the scrapbook contest. Boston Latin Academy's scrapbook placed 3rd and Mount Greylock's scrapbook placed 8th in the large school's category. The state scrapbook placed 6th. Congrats to all of our winners!

This convention was one of the best of the best, even though you had to walk a long distance to wherever you wanted to go. Massachusetts did extremely well in all the categories. We would like to give a big HI!!! to one of our own, Amanda Marcellino, NJCL 2nd VP, for the great job she did! Amanda, Massachusetts loves you!
