Service with the White Star Line |
The Suevic herself was no stranger to disaster. In 1908, before my father sailed in her, the Suevic ran aground off the Cornish coast. Her bow was stuck fast, but they managed to sever the damaged bow from the rest of the ship and tow her into port. A brand new bow was built, and fitted to the rest of the ship, which had survived intact. Suevic continued in service on the Australia run for many years. |

Captain Hayes joined the White Star Line in the days when the "Big Four" Cedric, Celtic, Baltic and Adriatic were competing with other companies for the fastest Atlantic crossing. In 1912 he was offered a job as 4th or 5th Officer on the new liner RMS TITANIC. He turned it down...... |
SS Suevic at Liverpool |
It would have meant a drop in salary despite the added prestige. It could also have meant the end of his career! On April 4th 1912, my father sailed from Liverpool to Australia on the SS Suevic as 3rd Mate. 8 days later, the Titanic struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage, and sank with heavy loss of life, including men my father had known as colleagues |
