Passage:

"No, what he feared, he knew, was not mortal danger. At least not now, not here. The closer he got to the conference room, the more he was repelled by a sense of evil, as if personified in that place. Almost without thinking, Buck found himself silently praying,
God, be with me. Protect me."

Left Behind, Tim LaHaye, Jerry B. Jenkins
Explanation:

Well, it is made obvious that Buck is in fear, since the author wrote, "No, what he feared, he knew was not mortal danger." However, other words give indication to the tone as well. the word "evil" immediately evokes a feeling of fear, as all things that are evil tend not to be the most pleasant things. The author also gives it more strengh, by adding that it is "as if personified in that place." Finally, to show that Buck if frightened, he silentely prays to God for protection, in hopes that it will alleviate him somewhat.
