Robert was a Norman Night with "William the Conqueror." He fought along side William in the "Norman Conquest" in 1066 in his invasion of England. He was rewarded by the King with land grants in County Bedford. In 1086 he was granted the Motte and Bailey Castle in Tamworth Burgess. His children married into the royal blood of England, France and Spain. The name "Despencer" means 'Stewart' or 'Steward', one who is entrusted with the management of property and finances. Robert's 5th great-grandson was Was Hugh Despencer "The Elder." Hugh was born about 1262. He served in the Welsh War, fought in the Battle of Dunbar (1), was in the expedition of Flanders, then was sent to negotiate with France which led to peace in 1303. When King Edward II was coronated, Hugh carried part of the Royal Insignia. He was dismissed from the Parliment for coming to the defense of Gaveston (one of the King's favorites) and was regarded as a deserter from the cause of the barons. He was soon back in the King's favor and was granted the castles of Devises and Marlbourough. When the King was condemned by the clergy, Hugh became the Earl of Winchester. Hugh was hated by Queen Isabella and was executed as a traitor on October 27, 1326. He was hanged from the gallows 50 feet high, drawn, disemboweled and beheaded. His body was given to the dogs after four days and his head was sent to Winchester. His son Hugh Despencer "The Younger" sought refuge at their castles at Caerphilly and Neath, but soon was executed as a traitor as well at Hereford in November 1326. His head was sent to London and was placed on the London Bridge. |
