Market Square Tavern was owned by Daniel Maupin and Margaret Via Maupin in the 1700's. This photo was taken in the 1940's. The tavern is located in Historic Williamsburg and is still functional and used as a concession stand and Bed and Breakfast. Click on the picture to go there!
Amer Via was born in Boulonge, France ABT 1650 and was the first Via to come to America ABT 1677 trying to escape religious persecution. He settled in Mannikantown, Va which was a Heugonot settlement on the James River. He married Margaret Spencer and became a farmer.
Their son William was also a farmer and a gentleman. Amer's daughters married well into prominent families.
John Via, William's son and also my direct line, married a Native American woman called Mary Powhatan. She was a member of the same Powhatan tribe as Pocahantas. John started a trend of marrying Native Americans that is still common in our Vires line today.
Margaret Via was Amer's daughter. She married Daniel Maupin, son of Gabriel Maupin. They owned the Market Square Tavern in Williamsburg, Va known today as Historic Williamsburg. The Tavern still stands today and is located on the corner Duke of Glouchester Street and Queen and in front of the Magazine.
David Via Sr., John and Mary's son, married Elizabeth and settled down in Amhurst County, Virginia as well. He fought on the Continental side of the American Revolution just like his father and brothers.
Gideon, David's brother was the first Via to go to Kentucky. He traveled over the Cumberland Mountains with Daniel Boone on an expedition to the Southern Colonies during the Revolution. Upon his return, had wild stories to tell his nephews about "The Wild Untamed West."
The men who traveled the "Untamed" lands were expert marksmen, rugged, tough, and a very independent breed.
