One of the more … um, dubious awards handed out this year was the UN-coveted Goon of the Year award. This award highlights excellence in the field of goonery! This year, it goes to our very own Nathan Eisbrenner!
Beating out Ricardo Martinez by only 1 foul, (Ricardo can be heard whoo-hoo-ing from Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm at 388-4727) Nathan tallied 46 total fouls, averaging 3.29 fouls per game and fouling out of 4 games all year. Coming in second place was Ricardo Martinez with 45 fouls (including 2 technical fouls in a classic meltdown against Skyhigh at the end of the first half) and in third place were Jimmy Martinez and Bill Stoddart both tied with 34 How aggressive was Shaka-Dula on defense? The team tallied 301 fouls against them while the opposition was limited to 230 fouls all year. Highlights of these goon-fests include the game against the Fighting Fish, where Shaka-Dula was called for 32 fouls, while the fish were limited to 13, and the game against Team Finesse where Dula won the foul race 34-18. |
Matt Flamand is not the biggest dog in the Pound. But you wouldn’t know it by the way that he plays. And all Shaka-Duleans agree. That’s why Matt Flamand has been named the team’s hardest worker by a vote of 10 to 12.
Playing against guys that are sometimes twice his size would make most people run for the hills. But as one of Shaka-Dula’s “big men”, Matt proved that size really does not matter. People can be heard saying: “Aw, man! Not Matt again! I hate it when he guards me!” every single game. And why not? The guy plays like a 6’-6”, 240 pound behemoth despite his 5’-10”, 175 pound (soaking wet) frame! Scoring a season (and possibly career high) 16 points against the Swisher Kings, and 10 against Skyhigh proves that flash can’t always outshine substance. On the court, all Shaka-Duleans can be heard cheering loud whenever Matt scores a bucket. And if you listen closely, you can hear the satisfied sighs of the players as one of their own gets recognized the way that he should have always been. Congratulations! |
As survey results were tallied and box scores were added, one thing became crystal clear: There was no arguing the impact that Jeremy Byrnes had on Shaka-Dula this year. Scoring double digits in 8 of 16 games, including 7 of 14 regular season games, Jeremy proved early and proved often that he was an assassin on the court. Thing is, you never heard a peep out of him until you looked at the scoresheet at the end of the game!
24 points against the Fighting Fish is impressive, as is 7 of 14 double digit games. However, the MVP was cemented during the Championship game where he literally put the team on his shoulders and carried them to a championship scoring 21 points – most of which came with under 6:00 left to play in the second half. As a silent assassin, he also did his share on the defensive end. Racking up a paltry 8 fouls all year, he proved that defense can be played aggressively without being overly physical. Scoring a total of 165 points – and besting the nearest scorer (Nathan Eisbrenner – 128 total points) by 37 points – and averaging 12.69 points per game makes him a solid weapon. But averaging 0.62 fouls per game makes him an invaluable member to the team. Who says nice guys finish last? Congratulations, Jeremy! |
