| (MR) Ah, the internet... a glorious treasure trove of knowledge and communications perfection. No longer do you need to go to a library to research the paper towel industry. No longer do you need to call your friends and hear their voices. No longer do you need to lick a stamp and write a bunch of stuff on envelopes. Yes, the internet is truly a massive advancement in the way we interact and conduct our lives. One thing the internet has given us is an all-new twist on the English language. There are several new abbreviations used to shorten commonly used phrases. Many of these phrases, such as "LOL" and "LMAO" came from the United States military... from Tactical to Practical (there's one for you, Hunter Ellis). Recently I was chatting with my friend Jessica via Yahoo! Instant Messenger and read a phrase I'd never before seen... IDK, which I later learned meant "I Don't Know." It's quite common that people ask me what all of these abbreviations mean, so I figured: why not list them all on my website so people don't need to ask anymore? Well, here they are. This page will be updated every time I learn of a new abbreviation. Special Thanks to Jessica M. for helping me come up with some of these! | (A) ASL - Age/ Sex/ Location (usually asked when someone wants to know the basics about a person) (B) BBL - Be Back Later BRB - Be Right Back BTW - By the way (C) CYA - See Ya (See you) (D) DL - Down Low (Something that is quiet or should be kept quiet; a secret) (E) ETA - Estimated Time of Arrival (when someone will be somewhere) (F) FTP - File Transfer Protocol (A method of sending or receiving files through websites) FU - Fuck you (G) GL - Good Luck GLA - Good Luck All (of you) (usually used in online video games) (H) HF - Have Fun (I) IDK - I Don't Know IP - Internet Protocol (this is basically an internet address... just a different way of writing one) ISP - Internet Service Provider (Usually a company that provides internet service, like AOL) (J) JK - Just kidding JP - Just Playin' (L) L8R - Later LMAO - Laughing my Ass Off LOL - Laughing Out Loud (M) M8 - Mate (UK slang for friend, fellow, etc. --- usually only used to reference males) (N) NM - Not Muc NOOB - Someone who is new to something NP - No Problem NVM - Nevermind (O) OIC - Oh, I See OMG - Oh My God (R) ROFL - Rolling On the Floor Laughing (S) SRY - Sorry STFU - Shut The Fuck Up SU - Shut Up (T) TY - Thank You (U) URL - Uniform Resource Locator (Basically, this is an internet website, page, or document) (W) WB - Welcome Back WC - Who Cares WTF - What the Fuck?
