Dear Wallace Bleh,

Here is my telephone number: +31 xx xxx xx xx and fax +31 xx xxx xx xx.

However, there is a slight problem. The telephone exchange here in Saaftinge was seriously damaged by fire two weeks ago and it is still very difficult to get any calls through, though the telephone company re doing their best to repair. You may give it a try though. It's probably going to be several weeks before the telephone system in Saaftinge is back to normal. Internet works on a cable system here which is not affected, so you can always e-mail me.

Meeting in Ghana is not really a problem, but you'll understand that I prefer to meet in a European country. Denmark comes to mind, the Netherlands will do nicely, the UK is allright.

It's really great that you have decided to invest this money in the clog industry here. I'm sure it's a first-rate investment!

Today, I discussed one on one with the Chairman of the Security Company and also present your investment plan to him but he promised that he was going to meet with his board members for approvals. As soon as the approvals are made, I will let you know and you will start making arrangment for your visit to Ghana.

Furthermore, I want you to know that the Security Company will hand over the money to you in person as you will now be known as our Family business partner. As you can see, I am just 21 years old and the company cannot hand over the money to me as clearly stated by my later father.

I will keep you posted as we proceed on what is to be done. Please respond to me and let me know your view about this mail.

I do beleive that by tomorrow the approval for your investment plan would be made and you will start making travel arrangemnet to meet with us here in Ghana,

Dear Wallace,

Everything is perfectly allright here, except for the fact that the telephone exchange here was damaged by fire two weeks ago as I told you. This will certainly make getting through on the telephone difficult. Sorry about this, but there is not much I can do about it...

Now let me summarize your proposal to me:

- You want to invest 10.500.000 USD in the clog industry here in Rottumerplaat.

- I am to travel to Ghana to discuss this deal with you.

- You promised to give me 10% of the total amount.

- We are to become business partners.

All of this is really a good idea. Now of course it's a lot of money which is involved. How can I make sure that you really own this amount and that it is to be transferred to Rottumerplaat? Are there any documents? Can you scan and e-mail them to me? (I suppose the fax lines are also damaged by the fire...)

As for travel to Ghana: next week there is the International Clog Convention here in Saaftinge which I can not possibly miss, being the chairman of the convention. As soon as I receive your documents I will announce at the convention about your willingness to invest this amount in the clog industry, which will certainly be great news!

After next week I will be able to travel to Ghana, let's say on 22 or 23 February. Would that be allright with you? Please let me know, then I will be able to start travel arrangements. I really look forward to meeting you.

Dear Wallace,

Thanks for your e-mail. So far I'm quite satisfied with the programme you laid out for me. I look forward to meeting you and your family. I haven't got much time to write now, in view of the oncoming International Clog Convention.

I made arrangements for the trip. We'll travel by KLM on 22 February 2004, flight no. KL589 from Amsterdam (which is the nearest International Airport to Rottumerplaat) to Kotoka Airport in Accra, arrival 20.25 hours. I hope this is allright with you? We booked a return flight on 9 March, which leaves Accra at 22.10, flight number [Drat it, forgot the flight number!]

I've got a few questions though.

  • Can you pick me up at the airport in Accra?
  • How will I recognize you? In view of that, can you send a picture of yourself?
  • I've got no idea whether I have to apply for visa for Ghana, what do you think?
  • How much money should I bring?
  • My wife tells me she would like to come to Ghana with me for a short holiday. I suppose no problem there.
  • Can you reserve a good hotel for the two of us? We prefer a suite in a fourstar hotel, I hope you can arrange for that.
  • Is there anything which you would like as a personal gift from me to you? How about a pair of clogs?

Hope to hear from you, now I've got to work again on preparing for the Clog Convention which starts on Wednesday.

Yours,

Dear Dr. Max Wieldruk

Many thanks for your email. I will be at the Airport on Sunday 22nd February 2004 to pick you and your wife at the Kotoka international Airport Accra Ghana.

I have attached in this mail copies of the Remarks letter, Certificate of Deposit and instruction letter signed by my late father and his then attorney as well as the Chairman of the Security Company.

I will help you make reservation in a Four Star hotel family Suite as requested by you.

As at today, the outstanding balance on demurrage is about US$10,650:00. So please try and come with this amount as we would be asked to settle this outstanding demurrage before the funds would be released to us.

In terms of gift items, I may not need any form of gift from you unless you so insist that you want to get one for me. But in my own opinion I would suggest that you bring some cooperate gift items Such as Wrist Watches, GSM Mobile Phones, Neck Ties and Ball pens for the management of the Security Company as appreciation as I would not like you to appreciate them in monetary value.

I will find out if you would need a Visa to travel down here. If yes then I would ask the Chairman of the Security to arrange a Cable Visa for you and your wife so that you can fly down here on 22nd Feb. as you have scheduled.

I will send my picture to you as soon as a I can but please do also let me have yours and that of your wife for easy identification as well.

I will await hearing from you shortly

Extend my greetings to your family.

Dear friend, if I may call you that,

Great, thanks about the visa! That saves a lot of trouble. Here's a copy of my passport; I suppose that will be sufficient.

I was very happy to receive your documents. I'm sure this investment in the clog industry will be heartily welcomed at the clog convention whcih starts tomorrow. I will announce it there. I have not much time to write now, tomorrow maybe none at all. The convention lasts all day tomorrow and Thursday. I'm looking forward to meeting you. Please let me know the address of the hotel you've booked.

I'll buy some mobile phones for the security company, and, just a special gift for you, a pair of clogs for you personally.

Your friend

Max

Now here's my passport... The passport picture is a detail of the painting 'The Laughing Cavalier (1624) by the Dutch master Frans Hals, in the Wallace Collection in London. (Strangely appropriate...) I like bringing the lads a bit of culture...

I was at the Ghana Immigration Office to tender the scanned copy of your interntional passport for the purpose of your cable Visa to allow you into Ghana. Every thing is going on fine but you still need to send a passport size phtograph of yourself that will be attached to the Visa.

If your Wife is coming with you, She will also need to send her international passport as two of you need two seperate entry visa.

I hope you do understand all what i have explained so far.

How was the convention today? I hope it all well smooth. Can't wait to meet you here in Ghana.

Dear Wallace,

The Clog Convention was a resounding succes, not in the least because of your oncoming investment in our industry, which was greeted with joy by everyone. I had some of the e-mails and you sent copied and distributed among the visitors, really, everyone congratuled me and you on your venture.

Well, Elisabeth (that's her full name, she is usually called Lies (pronounced Lees)) and I are really looking forward to meeting you. Lies went and bought three mobile phones for the security company (Nokia 6220, would that be allright?) and it is a surprise, I had a lovely pair of clogs specially decorated for you, but you will find out soon enough.

About payment for the visa: no problem of course, but how are we to pay these $200 at such short notice? You did not indicate a bank account number or Mr Erueme's address, so that is a problem. Can we pay for the visa as soon as we arrive? That would be easier, we think.

Please let me know.

Well if you so wish to make the payment to the Ghana Immigration at the Airport, that won't be a problem but I was informed by the Officer in Charge that it would be neccessary for you to send the $200 for the Visa through western Union in the name of Mr. Desmond Erueme for your entry visa to Ghana.

I will also inform the Security Company about your precious gift of Nokia for their Staffs.

One more Important Question I would want to ask you is that What is the meaning of "CLOGS" as I have checked on it and it sound so odd. Could you please explain it meant by it? [Great, he wants to invest 10 million dollars, but he hasn't got a clue what he's going to invest his money in...]

Dear Wallace,

Clogs are the English word for the shoes which are traditionally worn by the people of Rottumerplaat and some surrounding countries, including Heligoland, Griend and others. I'm sure you'll like them. (The ones I had prepared for you are for decoration purposes only, handcrafted, handpainted, really a small work of art...)

I had very busy day at the office today, lots of meetings in the aftermath of our successful convention so I did not have time to access my e-mail until late in the afternoon. So when I read you wanted me to pay for the visa by Western Union it was after banking hours and tomorrow being Saturday (and the banks here in Rottumerplaat being closed) I won't be able to send the money. Anyway, I made sure I'll have plenty of ready money with me when travelling to Ghana to pay for the hotel and our holiday, and you mentioned that some demurrage had to paid to the security company. I suppose 50,000 dollars will amply meet our needs, don't you think?

Tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon my wife Lies and I will leave by train for Schiphol airport in order to be able to travel on Sunday. I may not have access to my emailbox in the meantime, well, maybe they'll have an Internet Cafe or something at Schiphol airport, but I'm not sure. I'm sure the telephone at the airport will work (they still haven't fixed the telephone exchange here in Saaftinge) so I will try to call you on the phone if I have time.

As I said, I'm really looking forward to meeting you.

Still a few questions:

- I asked you for a photo of yourself so I would be able to recognize you at the Kotoka airport. So far you haven't sent one. Now this does not really matter. Now if you come to meet me at the airport be sure to hold a sign with my name on it and you might add the name of our company in which you're going to invest, KUTMETPEREN.

- I asked you to book a good hotel for us. Can you give me the name and the address (and the telephone number) of the hotel please and send me a copy of the reservation slip if at all possible? Suppose I miss you at the airport, we will at least be able to take a taxi to the hotel and you'll be able to find me at the hotel.

That's all for now, we'll keep in touch, please keep me posted, and I hope to see you on Sunday!

Yours,

Dear Wallace Bleh,

What are you talking about? I got a bit excited yesterday over your not appearing at the airport, but I must say you have made up for it, although I haven't met you so far!

This morning at 10.30 your barrister Adams Wellington met me at the hotel. A friendly, well-spoken, well-dressed gentleman he was, too. Together we drove to the Broadway Security Company on no. 4 Administrative Street. I showed him the documents you sent to me, he showed me a document proving that he was your barrister. He introduced me to the manager of the security company, Mr. David Johnson, who was very very happy with the Nokia phones I gave him.

Everything ran really smooth. Anyway, everything seemed allright so I paid the outstanding demurrage to the manager, he signed and sealed several documents and he said everything was in order now. So I asked him to show me the boxes, which he did, and we had a look at the content.

Now there was a bit of a problem, I understand that for security reasons the money in these boxes had been blackened. But Mr Johnson showed me that by the use of a certain chemical it is really easy to remove the black from the banknotes. Unfortunately, he said he did not have enough of the chemical to clean the all of the banknotes and it's rather expensive, some 15.000 USD. Now I did not have that money with me, I left my money in the safe at the hotel. Anyway, to prove that this blackened money could be converted into real money, he gave me a 100 dollar banknote which he had cleaned before my very eyes, and he asked me to go into any bank in Accra, to change the amount into local currency to prove it was absolutely real, which I did. Without any problem I could change this banknote at the Bank for Credit and Commerce and I got some 875,000 Ghana Cedis for it!

So tomorrow Mr Wellington will pick me up again and then I'll pay for these chemicals at the security company. The manager, Mr. David Johnson, promised to have the boxes shipped to Rottumerplaat so I guess everything is in order. But I must invite you to come over to have a drink at the hotel to celebrate the success!

Max Wieldruk is my real name (I wonder what made you doubt about that), but I understand some mistake was made at the hotel, somehow a typo was made and they changed into Eieldruk. We're in room 419. [This ought to give it away...] Anyway, Mr Wellington even confirmed everything to me.

Here's his e-mail:

I've got plenty of cleaning fluid now, although it cost a lot of money.

I still have my gift for you with me here. Here is a picture of the special hand-made and hand-decorated clogs, which are rightfully yours. Please come and visit us at the hotel, or give us a call.

Yours,

=====

Here is the gift I had in mind for him. A real work of Rottumerplaat art, which gives an idea of the high standard of the Dutch tourist souvenir industry. ;) (Mind you, I always wear clogs when working in the garden, and clogs are widely used in rural areas in the Netherlands, of course not with this sort of decoration...) However, I don't think he will come and collect his clogs...
