PLAYOFF PREVIEW

Roosevelt Island vs Brooklyn
This is the most balanced game of all the 4 games scheduled. Whoever gets the break will win this game. This match-up features Jason Alvior and Toto Anterola, both quality big men and both can play five positions. If they even up each other, watch for the supporting cast which favor POWs because they have more firepower but they lack the discipline which Dbuangs exhibited throughout the regular season. Brooklyn has is more adept in playing set up basketball while POWs rely on their 3 points and their inside game. Robert Chua and Joseph Treyvilla will cancel each other, while Noel Tayag and Orlan Remorca grab the offensive rebounds and play the inside game. The shooters of POWs are more adept and deep with Lantin and Cuevas beyond the arc.The Dbs needs Caluya to step up to advance. The bench are even, with a slight advantage of Dbs because they have more bodies to throw. The key here is running game which both teams excel. Luciano, Maquiran and Pinlac against the bench of Db which includes, Toti Celebre, Alvior and Rj Chua.
Advantage- Even (take your pick)

CTnY vs Fresh Meadows
Last time they met CTnY clobered Takuza, now its revenge time. Takuza has more experience but they lack the speed which CTnY possess. If Takuza play with CTnY style of game then Takuzaz are heading for early exit. Takuza must play the deliberate tempo they are known for, crisp passing, moving without the ball to beat their younger and much livelier opponents. CTnY under the titulage of Coach Afable sometimes shows some weaknesses and that is, not holding the lead at the end. They often collapse if they have sizeable lead towards the stretch, which they have to watch against Takuza coz they are not selfish and they hit the open man. Mole, Rapay and Policarpio are the men to watch while Gevero, Abas and Paran are the key players for Takuza. Bench wise, Takuza has more talent but CTnY are more younger.
Advantage- CTnY

NY vs Jamaica
Hagibis is on a mission. Impossible that is, but anything can happen. Jamaica, who showed promise early in the season, are still a dangerous team and with Salvador's leadership, they have a chance to pull an upset here. They have to lock San Pedro on the perimeter and the high leapin Cordero around the basket. Galindo, who is at 5'8 is the tallest at Jamaica will have to do a yeoman job to control the board against Cascasan and Maala. Coach Egasan knows his team well and he will do anything for their championship quest, meanwhile Coach Hipol, one of the most underrated coach in the league will have his hands full against the athletic PABAs. Linga and Pavo have to play the game of their life if they wish to play on the second round. PABAs have a deeper bench with Balbarin, Ella, and Tibay fittin against bench of Ciron , Gatchailan and Alfaro. PABAs has more ability but you cannot discount the heart of the Hagibis.
Advantage- NY

Manhattan vs Queens
Sportsmaster should have no problem of disposing this team. Queens never won a game and are not expected to get a W here. This is a David and Goliath in the making. It will be Castillo against the Sportsmaster. It will be a biggest heist of all time if Harabas pulled this one. Sportsmaster are superior on all positions against Harabas.
Advantage- Sportsmasters

NY PABAs 92- Roosevelt Island POWs 85
PABAs came from behind victory attest their resiliency as they outgunned POWs at the last 1:30 minutes. A 11-5 spurt led by their scoring guard San Pedro 2 triples and pair of charities sealed POWs hope for an upset. The game was close throughout the period and with the POWs having only six players suit up, their oxygen consumption was raised to another level as they keep pace with the running game tempo of the NY PABAs. With Treyvilla fouling out 8 minutes left on the game, Anterola picked up where he left off and scored succeeding points as they rolled into a 9 point lead on way to the last 4 minutes of the game. Balbarin and Cordero hit on two lay-ups to cut it to 5 but Tayag scored on the baseline giving them 7 points cushion 2 minutes left on the game. Luciano committed 2 key turnovers and missed 2 free throws for POWs and San Pedro hit 2 triples to giving them a lead .They never surrendered.

Saturday Game Result (July 20 2002)

Roosevelt Island POWs routed Fresh Meadows Takuzas
POWs 86 Takuzas 75
Takuza lose their chance to move up in the standings as they were defeated by the POWs. With the POWs victory, they secure the 4th spot. They led as much as 20 points in the first half behind Lantin’s terrific shooting beyond the arc. Fresh Meadows were caught by surprise by the superior shooting displayed by POWs. Gevero, Paran and Flores combined for 53 points but not enough to overcome the deficit. Takuzas went into a man to man defense to cut the lead to a single digit on the second half but consecutive triples by Lantin and a couple of driving lay-ups by Luciano put POWs ahead for good. Coach King Takuza’s tried to trapped and pressed POWs guards late in the second half, but POWs ball handlers cross the half court easily leading to easy baskets. POWs outrebounded Takuza at both ends of the floor.

CTny connection trounced Queens Harabas
CTny 79 Harabas 52
Harabas was still laying eggs on the L column, and they were completely outplayed by the more cohesive CTnY team, Coach Afable’s team were vastly superior in all aspects of the game. Mole led the assaults with his 21 points , Policarpio’s 19 and Antonio’s 14. Harabas young guns were out of synch, especially on offense as they fired ill advised shots, they showed no improvement on defense as once again they were blown out by their opponent.

Manhattan Sportsmaster edged out NY PABAs
Sportsmaster 79 PABAs 69
In the battle of the undefeated,Sportsmaster muscled their way in as they hold strong to their lead mid 2nd half. PABAs succumbed to pressure early in the second half as they showed immaturity by some tech fouls called on them. The younger PABAs were outsmarted, and out played by the more team oriented Bollozos team. Coach Egasan knows that his team needs to step up during crucial times instead of whining to all whistles. The game was tight onto the second half 33-31 and the hype was evident by both teams showing strong defense, most shots were contested early on. Coming into the 2nd half Sportsmasters Villegas went into an onslaught as he scored 3 consecutive baskets mostly on the paint, giving them a comfortable margin of 6 points. Paguntalan triples and Junio’s offensive boards and put back put them to double digit lead on way mid second half 56-45. PABAs never recover on that blitz.

Brooklyn Diablong Buang crushed Jamaica Hagibis
Brooklyn Db 68 Hagibis 53

Hagibis tied the score at 20-20 late in the second half behind Salvador driving lay-up but were out-scored 13-4 on the ensuing play on Chua and Caluya consecutive triples. With 14 minutes to go Lingad and Galindo kept the rally as they scored on Brooklyn’s sloppy passes 46-40 early in the second half. Missed shots and turn over by Hagibis 5 minutes left on the game gives Brooklyn 46-56 advantage. Marquez triple cut the lead to 51-58 but two quick lay-ups by Alvior and Bautista sealed Hagibis fate.

Sportsmaster overpowered flawed Harabas
Manhattan Sportsmaster 80 Queens Harabas 55
As Harabas continues to look for the right combination of players to catapult them to victory, they were once again trashed. Searching for a missing link that will end up their misery they once again failed. Sportsmaster overwhelmed them with swift execution of offense spearheaded by their point man Paguntalan. Harabas put themselves in a big hole as they have two games left prior to playoff and the way they performed it seems that they are perturbed, disconcerted and confused. Harabas trailed early in the 2nd half 18-31 and never recovered. The much superior balance offense of Sportsmaster plunged Harabas into further oblivion 34-59. It was never a contest. New recruit Ramos led the Harabas in scoring. The old reliable Lacson and Mike Albano led the assault with their vaulted defense that led to numerous turnovers propagating easy shots to their team mates. It wasn’t worth a sweat remarked by Coach Bollozos and some of their key players.

POWs defeated Diablong Buang
Roosevelt Island POWs 84 Brooklyn DB 75
Noel Tayag broke out the tie 61-61 late in the second half with a twisting shot under the rim, and put his team ahead which POWs never relinquished. Brooklyn rally from 8 points deficit and made it interesting as they tied it on Rj Chua’s runner. His brother Robert (22 points) and Bautista (10 points) did most of the damage early first half but the POWS 3 point shooters are hitting their marks keeping the score close late 2nd half.. Pinlac scored 3 points and had 2 key offensive rebounds when Brooklyn cut the lead to 3 points 69-72. POWs were nursing a 2 point lead with 5 minutes to go but Lantin and Cuevas consecutive triples gave them a huge cushion and Brooklyn rally led by Alvior and Remorca fell short.

Fresh Meadows Takuza 73 Queens Harabas 62

Queens Harabas struggling
Queens Harabas fell out short again as they struggled, preventing them to win for the 4th time. Armed with 2 new players (Ramos and Villarica), still they need to jell and put up a tremendous heart to seal there first one on the win column. Again Fresh Meadows balanced attack led by Gevero and Vicencio shut down Harabas hope for a victory. Harabas was leading with a slim margin late first half, but their their pivotman Repollo was missed as the Takuzas dominated the battle of the boards with Vicencio grabbing 8 rebounds , Abas and De Sagun hauled down key offensive bounds too. Harabas Castillo had another big game but was not good enough to compensate for their lackluster play towards the end of the second half. Harabas commited several turnovers and Takuza made them pay for it.

Sportsmaster 79 Jamaica Hagibis 49

Jamaica Hagibis derailed
Manhattan Sportsmaster running like a well oiled machine continue to tear up the league as they lambasted the hapless Hagibis. It was finished early in the first half 30-12 as Hagibis missed shots and made numerous turnovers paving the way to Sportsmaster effortless victory. It was a matchless running game carried out by the Sportsmaster as Paguntalan led the attack with 11 assist night and a well controlled tempo he mastered. Angelo Paguntalan , one of the premier point guard of the league ran an efficient steady offense triggering fastbreaks and easy opportunity for points to their winged man Otazu (9 points) and Villegas (17 points). Marques and Pavo were the only Hagibis putting up a fearless fight, 12 points each as their team acted like a derailed train .Hagibis were behind as much as 40 points.

NY PABAs 65 Brooklyn Diablong Buang 64

CT PABAs nosed out Brooklyn Diablong Buang
PABAs escaped to a 65-64 victory as Brooklyn ‘s Chua last second shot was not counted as the time ran out. The much quicker PABAs came from behind victory was a great test for their resiliency as they battled the much experienced and wiser Brooklynites. The game was close through out and few key turnovers decided the outcome of the game. It was a see-saw battle all the way to mid 2nd half but Alvior and Remorca’s second opportunity shots gave them a 5 point cushion 53-48 on way to last 4 minutes of the game. PABAs kept on pushing the ball and scored on easy lay-ups. Villas hauled down key rebounds on the stretch, Cordero added 12 points Balbarin also got 10 points for the PABAs. Apol and Alvior were the top scorers for Brooklynites.

CT PABAs 86 Roosevelt Island POWs 85

CT PABAs worn out R.I.POWs
Shorthanded POWs lose to a younger CT PABAs as their legs and lungs showed exhaustion the entire mid 2nd half . CT shows a lot of energy and hustled the entire game giving them 8 point lead going to the first 4 minutes of the 2nd half. Rapay scored mostly on the baseline as POWs defense collapsed due to fatigue. Lantin kept POWs on the game with his 3 point prowess but then again without the bench and PABAs energy, fresher legs prevailed. Policarpio and Abubo were also a big factor as they hit their free throws. Both teams were on penalty but PABAs made more shots on the line, POWs were doing their defense with their hands as they got to penalty early. Treyvilla dished out 10 assists for the POWs. Anterola scored 45 on a losing effort.

Saturday Game Result (June 22 2002)

Roosevelt Island POWs 89 Queens Harabas 87 (OT)
Queens Harabas remained winless
POWs Anterola scored a season high 45 points, 4 in OT to beat Harabas. His game high 10 rebounds paved the way to their first victory of the young season. POWs led as much as 16 points at the end of 1st half, However Harabas’sTan and Castillo surge for consecutive points to tie it on the mid 2nd half. Going to the last 5 minutes Harabas pulled away by 5 points on Alex Valdes fade away shot. Treyvilla runner and Anterola’s clutch 3 pointers tied it at 79. Castillo was fouled and hit one free throw, 80-79. Then in the ensuing play Anterola’s drive to the basket was fouled by Castillo (fouled out), he hit both shots 81-80. On the Harabas last possession Tan missed the shot but Abuyuan was called for loose ball foul on Harabas’ Serrano. Serrano’s inability to step up and hit both charities led them to their demise.

NY PABAs 92 Jamaica Hagibis 59
NY PABAs Blasted Jamaica Hagibis
In a physical tough match up where 45 fouls were called and guts were doubted, PABAs outstretched the physical Hagibis team. PABAs went to penalty early but Hgibis did not take advantage of those free shots as they struggled to make their shots. Cordero and Villas continued to make easy lay ups and their young guns controlled the board. In an early scuffle between Maala and Ubahib benches were emptied but cooler head prevails. Harabas were out ran and out hustled by their younger opponents never took the lead as they were totally blowned out and erased by the PABAs.

CT PABAs 70 Brooklyn Diablong Buang 60
CT PABAs outlasted Brooklyn Diablong Buang
A total team effort by PABAs gave them a 2-1 record of the season. A balance attack led by Mole’s 18 points and dashling passes to his team mates stunned the Diablong Buang leading them to their second setback of the season. The quicker and much younger CT PABAs were more vigorous than the fading Brooklynites who missed a lot of easy shots under the rim. They outrebounded PABAs but their setbacks helped the PABAs win. Jay Alvior scored 19 points on a losing effort.

Manhattan Sportsmaster 71 Fresh Meadows Takuza 59
Manhattan Sportsmaster junks Fresh Meadows Takuzas 71-59
A dismal start by the Takuzas and delivering blows by the Sportsmaster gave them an early deficit 24-11 which they never recovered. The first five minutes of the game were all Sportsmaster shows as they were hitting on all angles. Fastbreaks were their key elements that night as they out ran Takuzas. The game becomes physical at the 2nd half and elbows were flying all over the court. Takuza’s Asa was ejected and some players were warned. Takuza rallied late at the 2nd half but the deeper and more talented Sportsmaster still hanged on. Gevero scored 19 on a losing cause. by wilp

The MBA 2nd weekend game of their 5”10 and below tourney.

Fresh Meadows Takuzas 64 Jamaica Hagibis 60 (OT)

Fresh meadows Takusa prevail.
In a thrilling exciting match between the two Queens’ counties, Jamaica hagibis fell short in OT as they lose to the Takuzas in the end to the wire finish. Fresh Meadows was leading onway to the last 10 minutes of the game when Jamaica spearheaded by the center Ubahib’s inside play and Marquez’s triple close down the gap to 2 points and from hereon the game was a see-saw to the finish. Fresh meadows had a chance to win it in the regulation time but their 2 shots were short and the buzzer went off at 57-57. In the OT Jamaica scored the first 3 points and never scored again. Gevero was the Takuzas leading scorer and he scored the last four points for his team in the OT.

Brooklyn Diablong Buang 53 Queens Harabas 45

Brooklyn overpowered the undermanned Queens Harabas.
Fatigue was a big factor for the Harabas loss as they sufferred their 2nd defeat. The shorthanded Harabas never led in the game, Castillo was a one man band on that game as he single-handedly put up a gallant fight but Brooklyn DBs were just too skillful for them. Chua was a terror on the offensive glass as he hauled down 6 offensive boards en route to their first win of the conference.

Manhattan Sportsmaster 73 R.I. POWs 56

Manhattan Sportsmaster chopped POWs into pieces.
Athleticism really favors Sportsmaster as their winged men controlled the lane scoring easy on lay-ups. POWs was behind 15 points early in the half as Cuasito and Paguntalan were hitting triples. POWs zone defense was no match to Sportsmaster perimeter shooting so they switch to a man to man defense on the second half cutting down the lead to a single digit but still Sportsmaster hanged on to give them a 2-0 record.

Bronx Tigers 56 Connecticut PABAs 47

Bronx tigers spur Connecticut PABAs
In the battle of the young guns the Tigers outrun and outhustled their counterpart as they cruise to their 2nd win of the young season. Tigers never relinquished the lead. Top scorer San Pedro was hitting on all angles and CTNY has no defensive clue on how to stop him. CTNY rally late in the 2nd half but can’t overhaul the early deficit as they suffered their first loss of the season…………by wilp
Saturday Game Result (June 8 2002)
Manhattan Sportsmaster 70 Brooklyn Diablong Buang 62

Manhattan Sportsmaster continues their mastery of Brooklyn Diablong buang as they defeated Brooklyn on a rematch of their last championship game. Serge Cuasito’s sweet shooting and Junio’s offensive rebounding paved way to their first victory of the season.Last conference MVP Lazo missed the entire first half but was not surely missed as Bollozos (just got traded to R.I. POWs after the game ) scored 18 points It was a neck to neck battle going to the 2nd half but Brooklyn lack of depth gave in. Jay Alvior scored 31 on a losing effort. Remorca was off that night scoring only 7 points.

Bronx Tigers 65 Queens Harabas 50

On the 2nd game of the night Bronx Tigers showed no mercy as they ruthlessly clawed Queens Harabas. It was over mid first half and the harabas never recovered. Queens flawed game was exhibited by their young players one on one, solitary style. Toto Egasan did a fine bench job as his tigers showed solid execution, spacing, and controlled tempo.

Jamaica Hagibis 59 Roosevelt Island POWs 56

On the 3rd game Jamaica Hagibis squeezed passed Roosevelt Island POWs. It was a tight game all the way to the last 3 minutes of the game. The POWs missed 13 of their 19 charity shots blowing a 9 point lead on the way to the five minutes mark, and Hagibis’s Salvador 3 point shooting, Pavo’s perimeter shots, Noel Hubaib inside game gave them the lead and never relinquished it. POWs Mark treys kept his team on track but then again it’s the free throws that killed them.

Connecticut PABAs 68 Fresh Meadows Takuzas 53

On the 4th game of the night Conneticut PABAs blasted Rey Vicencio’s Fresh Meadows Takuza as they helplessly watched their younger opponents control the game thoroughout out the night. The game was never close and everytime Takuza made a rally the fresher legs of Connecticut kept them ahead. The younger PABAs gave their older brother something they can’t handle..quickness to the ball.

Let’s get ready to rumble.!!!Its 4 teams, one ring, put up or shut up, go harder or go home. It’s playoff time!!!. The time of year where players become heroes from last seconds shot. Where goats have all summer long to eat grass on their yards. Players separate themselves from being a champ to a chump.
Playoff time rush arrived and the teams are now devising, designing an insidious strategy (stragedy) for their team. Players, coaches, trainers and fans are all soup up, ecstatic, thrilled by the way it end up and the way it will be. Precious moments were captured during that single elimination round, lows and highs precipitated during the intense games. Winning and misery that’s what it is. The june to madness is here, its time to measure, gauge each team weaknesses and strength.
Will the real champion please stand up!!
Tsonggong hikain -appears to be the most confident amongst the 4 teams, coz they blew away the competition all season long.
Diablong buang - seems like to be certain, focus as they marched themselves to the next round.
Lakbay-toma - looks to be the threat of the tourney as their two imports will play together for the first time and will have a full team on the go.
Bad Bananas- last year champion appears to be the sleeper in this playoff as they lean on their playoff experience to carry them over and covet that elusive championship. No one has ever win this tourney back to back..

Dahil sa Chicks eradicated

you’re the weakest link, Goodbye

In an elimination battle Bad Bananas prevailed in an exciting dramatic finish which gave them boost to the later round. Macatugal game high 40 points was a monster on both sides of the floor possessed like a devil gushing out of a steamy hot hell putting his team into the next round, erasing Dahil sa Chicks dream of moving to the next level.. The game was tied at 89, 2 minutes to go, both teams were on penalty, charity stripes dictated the outcome of the game. Reylara missed a three pointer on Dahil sa Chicks last possession and Piniero was fouled on the rebound. The last game goat sank one shot 90-89 breaking the tie for the last time. On the ensuing play Felix missed on a runner and again Macatugal was fouled, hitting one shot giving them a two point cushion. Salvador was fouled on a driving lay up sinking one charity 91-90 Bad Bananas up by one. On the inbound play 58 seconds left, O Maquez intercepted the ball from Galindo over dribbling and scoring on a lay-up 93-90 Bananas up by 3. Jun Felix was fouled on the next DsC possession but missed one of two charities, Bananas still up by a deuce, 28 seconds left. Marquez missed a 10 footer on the left wing and on Tabell rebound he passed it to Galindo rushing to their court but the ball was stripped by Marquez onto Macatugal driving lay-up fouled and one, sinking calmly the bonus shot making it 96-91.Galindo hit a lay-up 96-93 on the ensuing play and fouled Piniero deliberately for a pair of charity, he hit one 97-93. Salvador missed a trey, Felix missed on a follow up the horn blows. It was a sorry loss for DSC which led as many as 16 points in the second half. Salvador tallied 38 points on a losing effort. Dahil sa Chicks fought tremendously till the end but was exhausted, ran out of gas as they have only one player on the bench. It’s a must win for both teams unfortunately one has to go and Dahil sa Chicks took the vacation. Dahil sa Chicks you’re the weakest link,,,goodbye!!!!

Tsonggong Hikain takes top seed by beating Lakbay-toma

Ryan Pastor triple double led Tsonggong Hikain to their fourth straight victory.
Pastor 10 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists registered the first triple double of the league; he is an error shy of a quadruple double which is a very rare accomplishment. A vaulting trapping defense by THikain paved way to their onslaught as they led as much as 25 points at the beginning of the second half. They played like a football team with a defense/offense substitution. They are just too deep, too young, and too athletic to the older, shorthanded slower Lakbay-toma.

UPCOMING GAMES
A win by Tsonggong Hikain gets them the first seed; a defeat creates a triple tie. If Lakbay-toma wins by 8 points or more they will get the first seed and will meet the winner of Bad Bananas and Dahil sa chicks. If they lose, they will be paired with Diablong Buang for the elimination round. Tsonggong Hikain , a 2-1 odds on favorite to win it all are a well balanced experienced team and they have it all given that they began to play since the day of time. Dahil sa Chicks and Bad Bananas split their games last year, Bad Bananas won the elimination games last time they met and are expected to wallop Dahil sa Chicks coz they enjoy a tremendous height advantage due to Denny (6”2) injury. Dahil sa Chicks will try to use its speed and firepower to offset Bad Bananas’ inside power game. It’s going to be a do or die , mano a mano, winner take all between this two teams (Matira matibay) and we are expecting a Dahil sa Chicks vengeance.

Commentary from a Bad banana
This week Bad Bananas will be playing their last regular game of the season against the under-manned but still deadly team Dahil sa Chicks. With their backs against the wall, it's survival time for the Bad Bananas. It is a do or die battle for this once mightly team, but the spirit of the samurai warrior lives within every player. Join us and witness the mother of all games as we slaughter the competition!

Lakbay-toma nosed-out Bad Bananas in a thriller
At the start of the first half advantages were exchanged several times, it was a see-saw battle. Approaching the late 1st half Bananas jumped into an early lead which extended to double digits at the beginning of the 2nd half. Big man Macatugal got hot scoring 3 consecutive baskets following two triples by Castillo led the onslaughts which gave them a comfortable 15 point s lead towards the mid 2nd half. Lakbay-toma initiated a pressing defense, Bananas weren’t ready for it and started to give the ball away causing the lead to diminish. The dog tired undermanned Lakbay-toma continued to full court press bananas anticipating for more turnovers managed to take the lead 72-70. Tiburcio scored 2 more shot at the paint giving Lakbay-toma a sizeable lead 3 minutes left at the game. Treyvilla was on fire during the rally hitting threes twice. Rooney was all over the court creating havoc on defense. Tiburcio’s steady hands and rebounding kept Bananas big men at bay but the fatigue factor gives Bananas one more stretch to tie it, 50 seconds left in the game. In a battle where pressure was in its peak , where you separate greatness to pretenders, when the crowd stopped breathing, sweat dripping on the floor, the game is on the line, where the best players demands for the ball…… the game was decided by charity …swish, crank, miss or hit. Missed free throws by Bananas Piniero followed by heroic foul shots by Rooney gave them the win…wilp

Roldan, a 6”2, 250lbs behemoth grabbed 12 rebounds as he was the pillar of their strength in the middle. On the losing end, Alvior suffered a minor cut on his eyebrow but still managed to score 18 pts, without Clemente’s hot shooting this game will be a blow out. Recuenco and Caluya cut the lead into a single digit 10 minutes to go on the second half but Hikain’s forward Junio and Serge Cuasito perimeter sniping close down the rally. by wilp
