Second Page of Part 3 |
Sometimes it is easier to get the final product if you know what that final product will look like. I think that this is a case where that is true. To your 18 fabric pieces or piles 1, 3, & 5 you will be sewing 4 small squares into each corner. Fabric A will go on the top 2 corners and Fabric B will go on the bottom two corners. |

This is what your final squares will look like. The dark line is your sewing line. |
Now...how do you get there. You can sew the 4 squares on each individual square, or you can strip sew each corner at one time. I recommend strip sewing, because it's easier and more relaxing. To do this you start sewing from one corner to the other, when you're almost finished, stop your machine, pick up your next 6" block, line up the 2.25" square where it belongs and without cutting your thread continue sewing the next one. You can do this for all the squares in the same corner. Then cut your thread, cut apart the squares, and start on the next corner. |
This step will be the most time consuming and probably monotonous part of this quilt. Since you don't have to think a lot to do this part, you can plan out your Thanksgiving menu, make your Holiday shopping list, restructure your 401K, etc. |
When finished with the 18 pieces or piles 1, 3, and 5; it will be time to sew on the 12 pieces that are left or piles 2 and 4. The only difference is that these 12 pieces will have Fabric B on the top two corners and Fabric A on the bottom two corners. You can use your favorite method of doing this. Like before I recommend the strip sewing method. |
When finished sewing, please fold the small squares to the outer edge and press with your iron. When you look at these pieces, your focus fabric should now look like a hexagon. |
Now would be a good time to redo the original layout of your I-spy pieces or ABC pieces. When the lay-out looks good, please sew the pieces into 5 rows of 6 pieces. They should look like this. |
