Ships and Cruisers of Antarctica |
Un-Assisted Approach I was surprised at how maneuverable these huge ships are. You can see the ever watchful Polar Star observing the tankers' arrival here at McMurdo. |
The Angle of Approach The ship was able to use it's propeller to swing the back end around and use it's on board winches to park right next to the shoreline dock.. |
Final Adjustments The water line indicator on the side of the ship says it's drawing about 39 feet of water. The arm of land we live on drops almost straight off into deep water.. |
Getting in Close The bow is driven right up to the shore line and it looked like they used differential power to pull the back of the ship around. |
