Descant
Billye Thatcher

Will heart songs I yearn to sing
lie mute in starless sky
or vibrate
as lyric charms unbound
in earthly time?
Love seems far away...
when lover lies
among decay
unborn
or cradled in the grave.
Cupid, your arrow misses,
though lodged deep
in my breast,
as one heart bleeds
crimson
with no one to cup the drops.

Vincent, disturb this universe!
Gather a beam
from a falling star;
add one red drop
from a bleeding heart.
Genesis will take caress
beneath a starry night.
Impress two hearts,
side by side;
harmonic chords
will ring the moon,
shine out a prism's bow,
and tiptoe tones
unheard before
among earth's migrant horde.
