"ONE NITE IN BANGKOK..."
Murray Head, Chess Sountrack
Wow!! Now that is a big shoe. Bangkok is a wild and fun town. It has everything: great shopping, historic traditions and culture, an exciting nightlife, an international presence, and friendly and hospitable people.
Out and About in Bangkok
Bangkok has a number of great places to buy things. First there are the massive shopping malls such as Mah Boon Krong or MBK. This is where we found this massive platform shoe. The malls range from dirt cheap bargain bins like MBK to expensive Hi-So (Thai slang for High Society) boutiques and shops such as Siam Center.
The food is wide and varied and it is everywhere. You can get breakfast from a street vendor selling fruits and other items, lunch from a sidewalk cafe serving noodles, and dinner at a 5 star restaurant.
The night life is varied and extensive. You can go to Soi 4 where the trendy kids go to club. Then there are the clubs at the various 4 star hotels: Spasso at Grand Hyatt Erawan or Rivas at Sheraton Grand too name a few. Or if you want a taste of the international, check out some of the ex-pat bars and pubs. While I was there I met Aussies, Kiwis, Brits, Frenchies, folks from all over the world.
Speaking of an international community. Can you believe these two pictures were taken in Bangkok, Thailand?
This is Delaney's, the Irish Pub located at Silom and Convent Rd. I spent some time there watching the Rugby World Cup. This is where I met all those Aussies, Brits, French folk, and Kiwis.
Ever watch rugby with a bunch of drunk and crazy Australians? It is a wild time ... AussieAussieAussie!! OyOyOy!! Aussie!! Oy!! Aussie!! Oy!! AussieAussieAussie!! OyOyOy!!
I was there with some friends when this bag pipe squad came in. I had to fight the urge to ask if they were fro the Clan McCloud. Oh by the way, real cute joke guy.
Are you sure this is Thailand?
If you are on a tight budget, this is the place to be. There are a bunch of youth hostel type places, in-expensive motels, and guest houses. Also you can find alot of local arts and crafts that normally isn't seen elsewhere. The night life varies from beer gardens and patios where "Margaritaville" wafts over the patrons to discos and dance clubs.
Interesting enough, considering how low rent everything may seem, Khaosan Road also offers Internet Cafes with the best rates in Bangkok. If you're wanting to check or send an email, this is the best price you will find.
This is a great place to meet college age folks from all over the world. In the picture to the left is Trevor from the UK, Kathy (from Canada), and from the UK, someone I like to refer to as Nigel Carruthers (because I can't remember). I also meet folks from Australia, Germany, and fellow Americans.

This is
Yung. We are hanging out at Soho
Bar & Restaurant, located at 44/15 Convent Road between Sathorn
and Silom Road.
This is a small place where you can find some of the best live music in Bangkok. The music ranges from old Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday standards sung by this gorgeous brunette from Norway to live jazz and R & B.
Drop by and say hi to Mike the California surfer guy ex-pat who happens to be co-owner and the entertainment coordinator. He's the American you'll see jamming with the band on the harmonica or the bongo drums. If you know your jazz and Sinatra, he may even comp you a couple of drinks while you listen to his holistic surfer dude philosophy.
