McMinn County Senior Citizens, Inc.
35th Anniversary
History
In 1974, the Athens Housing Authority applied for and received a grant, in the amount of $5,000.00 to start a Senior Center. Charlotte Inman was hired as the director for the center. It soon became a non-profit organization and formed a board of directors. The Center was first located in the Clem Jones Activity Building. In 1976, it moved to the Athens Housing Authority Building, where it grew until an addition was needed to accommodate the large number of Seniors who attended the facilities. Membership continued to grow until this Center was also too small to accommodate everyone. After much planning and labor, a beautiful new Activity Center was completed in 1998. It is located at the corner of Park Street and McMinn Avenue in Athens. Seniors can now enjoy a more spacious, modern facility with many daily activites. After decades of dedicated service, Executive Director Charlotte Inman retired. Holly Currier joined the staff in the spring of 1998 and later that year became the new Executive Director. McMinn Senior Activity Center is currently celebrating its Ten Year Anniversary. As attendance has continued to grow, it prompted the need for a recent parking lot expansion and future plans to expand the current facility.

Special Events
The weekend before Thanksgiving we hold our Annual Christmas Bazaar and Craft Show. The bazaar features pecans, home baked items and crafts made by members of our center; as well as items by local crafters. One of the items we feature is our collection of "original" ornaments made out of lightbulbs. This year we will be offering the beginning of a collection of crocheted angel ornaments. There will be a limited number of crocheted angels; when they are gone there will be no more available. Each year a new angel will be added to the collection and the previous year's angel will be retired. This will be continued as long as we have someone available to do the crocheting. We have several Day Trips, Mystery Trips, and Overnight Trips to various locations thruout the year. We enjoy listening to guest speakers during the year and the AARP conducts monthly meetings at our facilities. The Center has parties to celebrate Birthdays and Holidays.
