TENNESSEE SOUTHEAST DISTRICT SENIOR OLYMPICS


APRIL 25 - MAY 2, 2009






The Southeast Tennessee District of the Senior Olympics covers the counties of Bledsoe; Bradley; Loudon; McMinn; Meigs; Monroe; Polk; Rhea.




The Tennessee Senior Games, Inc. began in 1981 with a misson to promote healthy lifestyles for seniors, through fitness, sports, and an active involement in life. The programs contribute to the vision of healthy, active, and vital senior adults.


Tennessee Senior Games is a member of the National Senior Games Association, one of the largest multi-sport events in the world . They are endorsed by the Tennessee Recreation and Parks Association.




The goals of the Tennessee Senior Games are:


Maintain and impove the health and wellness of Tennessee's senior adults;


Provide a competitive athletic, recreational and creative experience for senior adults;


Focus attention on the importance of regular physical exercise in every individual's personal plan of health;


Provide an opportunity for socialization for senior adults from across the state; and


Establish a consistent statewide network of District Senior Games that culminate in an annual state final.





There are 10 districts, representing 96 counties, that hold Senior Olympic games every spring. Anyone who competes in the District Games qualifies for the State Games. Then the finalists from the State Games quality for the National Senior Games, which are held every 2 years. The 2009 National Senior Games will be held in San Francisco, California.




The events are divided by age groups: 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70-74; 75-79; 80-84; 85-89; 90& up.


Your age is determined by how old you will be on Dec. 31st of the year you are competing; not by your age at the time of competition. For example, if you are only 49 but will be 50 before the end of the year you can compete in the 50-54 age group.




The Senior Olympics includes the following events: Archery; Basketball; Bowling; Cycling; Golf; Horseshoes; Pickleball; Shuffleboard; Swimming; Table Tennis; Tennis; Softball; Softball Throw; Track & Field; and Volleyball.
