A designated marksman can engage multiple targets faster this is done at closer ranges to compensate for the decreased accuracy of a semi automatic rifle.
Just a deadly as the sniper the designated marksman can shoot once & melt back into the terrain. The designated marksman has the security of a faster follow through shot should the need arise to engage multiple targets.
The designated marksman is more suited to be used in urban operations, semi rural areas where distances are shorter & multiple targets engaged.
A scoped semi automatic rifle in .223 Rem. or .308 Win. can be used by a designated marksman. A .223 Rem allows the bullet to fragmentate quicker when passing through a person or objects it has a shorter effective range than a .308 Win.
A .308 Win bullet has the ability to pass through glass staying mostly intake. A 308 Win. bullet can travel longer distances less effected by the wind to reach the target.
These can be a consideration to the designated marksman when selecting between a .223 Rem. or a .308 Win. semi-automatic rifle for use in different tactical situations & environments.
The designated marksman is tasked as team leader with a scout observer in a designated marksmen team. A designated marksman can operate as scout observer back up sniper on a scout sniper team.
In some situations a designated marksman can operate alone the employment of a scout observer providing security is recommended as it is in a scout sniper team.
In a 4 man fire team 2 designated marksmen teams can operate together or a scout sniper team & a designated marksmen team can operate together. The designated marksman would lead the 2nd Team as assistant fire team leader.
Another 4 man fire team concept is to employ a 2 man scout sniper team & a scout sniper with designated marksman observer on the second team the designated marksman can act as 3rd sniper.
