9th Brigade 5th Division Mecosta County MI is going to conduct training in methods practice of summer travel techniques, fire starting, water resupply purification, foraging, emphasis will be placed on construction of improvised shelters to help conceal, protect the teams from observation & the elements. Use of bicycles as a method of mounted patrolling & transportation with be covered with members. Subjects covered are basic bicycle maintenance repair, equipment selection, methods of carrying equipment, on road off road travel, movement, formations while riding, tactical bicycle camping, security, scouting, message delivery, communications, transportation support of bicycles in conjuction with other vehicles. The use of bicyles can aid a unit in patrolling by increasing speed, range of travel, reducing fatigue while allowing for rapid mounting & dismounting of riders to conduct foot patrols. Bicycles allow the riders to see, hear & smell activities in their surrounding that could be missed with use of closed vehicles such as cars, vans or trucks. Bicyceles provide a quiet stealthly method of movement as opposed to ATV use. Level 2 Members who own canoes are asked to bring them. Training will be conducted in the use of canoes as a means of scouting ahead along waterways, silent water transportation, & use in support/supply missions. Team(s) will proceeded to the "barn" with the "farmer" for a mission brief. Two man team(s) - four man fire team(s) will then proceed on with their "mission" & conduct an independent action. Two man team(s) - four man fire team(s) will move by waterborne craft to a "houseboat" where they link up with the "captian" by prearranged signal/code. Two man team(s) - four man fire team(s) will recieve a mission brief for "conducting an independent action" along the waterway. Two man team(s) - four man fire team(s) will then proceed on with their "mission" & conduct an independent action. The purpose of the training scenario(s) is to develop the abilities of the individual two man & four man team(s) to conduct independent actions on land & along waterways while practicing their patrolling skills in a tactical scenario. Each two man rifle team - four man fire team training scenario varies slighlty & has a route, area, or point recon to be completed. Team(s) will then move on to establish a patrol base or construct a team survival shelter. Teams will provide security of their "base" on a rotating basis between team member(s) until morning. Teams will then proceed back to the "main camp" for debrief by 0900 am. Road marches & off road patrolling can be a slow tiring means of travel over an extended area.
