Madison Hope Chinese School (MHCS) began in the summer of 1999 and has grown and evolved over the past five years. The initial classes were taught by director, Hui Cheng and were held at the Eagle Heights Community Center for more than 4 years. As the school grew, we required more space and are now meeting at the Madison Christian Community Building at 7118 Old Sauk Road, Madison on Saturday mornings.

We have about 40 children who are enrolled in our Saturday morning “Special Chinese” classes and dancing classes. Most of the children are adopted from China. The parents and children are united by a desire to grow up with an awareness of and love for their birth culture. We believe our children need to know the Chinese language in order to understand Chinese culture.

We are so encouraged by the children’s achievement and enthusiasm! The children can sing many Chinese children's songs and can say many Chinese words with perfect tones! The children’s handwriting has greatly improved through the practice.

Our dance classes have accepted many invitations to perform at various civic and cultural events and have been very well received. They have performed for many community events, including four years at the UW Memorial Theater for the Chinese New Year’s Talent Shows, twice in the Madison Civic Center for the Children’s Arts Festival and “Kids Cross Road” events and also at St. Mary’s Care Center. They have danced at the Moon Festival Celebration, at a Celebrate Youth Day at our new Monona Terrace Convention Center, and at “Call for Peace” in the front of the Wisconsin Capitol. They also performed for “International Adoption Citizenship Day” in the Capitol and at the Henry Vilas Zoo! The children performed for 4th International Adoption Citizenship Day on July 10, 2004! They were also invited to dance in the Children's Art Festival at the Overture Center in April 2005!

The Dance classes have become quite polished after so many performances and it is a real pleasure to watch them perform! Through all these activities, children not only learn Chinese language and dance, but also build friendships within their rich cultural heritage!

A mother of three lovely girls says, “as a parent, this is a wonderful group of parents and kids. I always feel like I am among friends when we gather! It is a delightful group to observe!” She said “We are aware that our children will not become proficient with just one class a week. However, we feel this is a start, an opportunity to learn enunciation and write at an age when language acquisition is natural.”

T he school is lead by a director, Hui Cheng, and wonderful teachers including Hua Fei, LanLan Ding, Amy Li, and Ling Zhang and a volunteer group of parents. We meet as needed to plan and direct our efforts. We are always open to new ideas and ways to connect our children with their heritage. We will continue to work to improve the quality of our programs! We hope that parents and our young students enjoy the program and look forward to learning more about China and the Chinese language!
