EDMONTON
City of Champions
Last Updated: February 11, 2008.
Map of Edmonton
The best inter-active map of Edmonton, built and mantained by the government of the City. This is another way of knowing about the sixth largest city of Canada.

Photos of my city
Edmonton's section of photos in the Found Locally website has more than 800 pictures of the greenest and most beautiful city of North America.

The images and words of this writer and photographer, who for the past 15 years has published nearly 1,400 articles about the past of our city. Besides the texts included in his website, it is also possible to read him in the Real Estate Weekly.

The Citadel Theatre
Located in the heart of the Arts District, the complex houses five performing spaces: Shoctor Theatre, Maclab Theatre, Rice Theatre, Tucker Amphitheatre and Zeidler Hall.

The Works
Organized by the International Visual Arts Society of Edmonton (Yes, we have one!) The shows take place downtown.
Klondike Days
It was recently renamed as "Capital Ex". Every year, 800,000 people visit the largest fair in the province to celebrate the Gold Rush to the Yukon.
River City Shakespeare Festival
Every year, the Free Will Players (theatre company) performs several works of William Shakespeare at Hawrelak Park.
Blueberry Bluegrass & Country Festival
This festival is housed by the town of Stoney Plain, west of our city.
Heritage Festival
This is the mother and grandmother of all festivals, and my absolute favourite. Three days in the majestic Hawrelak Park, with music and food from more than 50 countries. We not only celebrate that we are all Canadians; we celebrate that we are humans.
Edmonton Folk Music Festival
Another three days by the riverside, listening to folk musicians. This festival is incredibly popular in Edmonton.
Fringe Theatre Festival
The largest festival of its kind in the English-speaking world. It takes place in Strathcona, on the south side.
Edmonton Labatt Blues Festival
Just in case we didn't have enough with the 3 days of music of the Heritage and another 3 with the Folk Festival, here we have 3 more days dedicated to the blues!
Canadian Finals Rodeo
Every year, Canada's best cowboys get together in the Colisseum to do their stuff. Always in Edmonton.
City of Festivals
Jubilee Auditorium
The Jubilee is a landmark on the south side of Edmonton. It's been in operation since 1957, but was recently renovated and upgraded.
The Highlands!
I lived in this place for a while. It's one of the best districts of Edmonton. Wonderful houses, huge trees, and all the ammenities that you would expect in what they call "a mature neighbourhood".
Melancholia
Edmontonians love festivals, specially dring the summer. This city has a little thing for everyone, and sometimes you're just exiting one festival when you find yourself in your way to the next one. I've gathered the links to the websites of the most important ones.
Moving Edmonton
The City is updating its Transportation Master Plan. I am not convinced that we really need to update it, but what the heck. I am passionate about urban planning (it's one of my frustrated vocations), so this site is indispensable to understand what is happening around here.
This is my city...
Edmonton Eskimos
This is the team that back in the 80's was responsible for the title of "City of Champions". I've been with them in the good times and in the good times. I am not around when they loose. Sorry!
Edmonton Oilers
I'm with this ones even when they loose. A couple of years ago they almost won the Stanley Cup. It took me a while to really understand why Canadians were so "all over the place" about hockey. After those nights in Whyte Avenue, when everyone in my city was going bananas about our team, I'm the one that is all over the place for the Oilers. Let's go Oilers!

This latest season they scheduled Bizet's Carmen, Mozart's Réquiem and Verdi's Falstaff. They perform at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.

Edmonton's History
Seven well written chapters and loads of photos about the past of Edmonton. This topic is one of my favorites. I think I have all the books published about it. All three of them.
Events Edmonton
This is the Association that organizes "A Taste of Edmonton", the Canada Day River Valley Festival and the New Year's Eve party in Churchill Square.

Where is here?
Edmonton Public Library
It was while sitting there, somewhere in the second floor of the Stanley Milner Library in Downtown Edmonton, where I discovered that this was
my city.
Edmonton Movie Guide
I'm leaving this link here because it comes awfully handy on a Saturday night, when we're bored at home and craving a good film. What the heck...
The Weather in Edmonton
"Welcome to Alberta. If you don't like the weather, hold on there for ten minutes..." Boy, is it true... You can easily experience all four seasons in half a day...
TRANSIT SYSTEM

Winspear Centre
The home of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and one of my favourite venues. If it was so darn expensive, I would be there every weekend. I guess you can't have it all. Can you?
Art Gallery of Alberta
It used to be housed in one of the ugliest buildings in town, but fortunately they've demolished it. I can't wait to see the new facilities of our Art Gallery.
Royal Alberta Museum
It used to be our Provincial Museum, until Queen Elizabeth turned it into "Royal". This place still has a long way to go, and it might as well start with a proper definition. Nobody really knows if this is an art museum, a natural history museum, an archeology museum... you get the point. Too many hats, but few heads around there...
Odyssium
I used to love this place until the phone company took over its "sponsorship". We still go, every now and then, to the IMAX Theatre or to use the telescopes. One day I'll write here how I wind up spending a full night, all alone, in this museum...
West Edmonton Mall
They claimed it was the largest mall in the world, and that was probably true at some point. Highly controversial, blamed for the decadence of the downtown area, the WEM is definately a landmark of our city, for good or for bad.
The Horses at Northlands
During the summer/autumn, it is hard to resist the temptation of going to the races, grabbing a hot dog and a thick slice of apple pie, and betting a few loonies and toonies. My compadre always wins (seriously, I've never seen him loosing, ever...)

Edmonton's Radio
I am not sure if the link on the right will last for long or not. I'm inclined to think it's going to be removed pretty fast, because this is what happens with websites like the one mentioned in the little poster. I guess I'll just have to fix the hyperlink once they kill the site, but I think I'm gonna leave the poster, just to prove that our town was "the Cultural Capital of Canada" at least once. Actually, this website is a very decent one. It was sponsored by the federal government (Canadian Heritage), the City of Edmonton
and a very interesting institution called "The Edmonton Arts Council".  (Caution: They don't seem to update their website very often). Anyway, my friends in Québec and Ontario would probably be surprised if they only knew that the cultural life of my city is far more attractive that what the name "Deadmonton" might suggest.
