...and my 50th birthday as well! I couldn't think of a better way to spend it! Time to get on the "Summer of Love" bus! |
When we arrived in late morning, the Unauthorized Rolling Stones were playing...what a great way to begin the day! They sound so much like the Stones and look like them too. |
..then the "Floyd Project" played -- they are from Denmark and they were incredible. If you close your eyes, you really thought you were listening to Pink Floyd! Pink Floyd actually formed in 1967, so it's their anniversary as well. |
Lead guitarist from the Floyd Project playing the guitar part of "Comfortably Numb," totally awesome! |
even though it was early, people are already starting to dance... |
We left the main stage for a while to wander around and check out all the cool vendors selling their peace necklaces and psychedelic art, tie-dye, scarves, even guitars..that's when we stumbled on to the second stage, the "Hippodelic" stage where Second Flyte began to play. They looked and sounded exactly like the Byrds, with two original members even!. |
I loved it when they sang and performed "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Chimes of Freedom," one of my favorite Bob Dylan songs, and stood there singing along... |
...and it was so cool to see people dancing...reminding me so much of the free concerts in Golden Gate Park in 1967, the Summer of Love |
Then, of course, they ended with "Turn, Turn, Turn..." What a beautiful song, and it sounded just as I'd heard it so many times... |
Then we returned to the main stage to see David LaFlamme and It's a Beautiful Day and Quicksilver Messenger Service, totally nostalgic. |
The Rave-Ups rocked! They're an awesome Yardbirds Tribute band, and it can't be easy to play guitar as well as Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck or Eric Clapton... |
...and then it happened -- what I'd been anticipating and waiting for all day long. The Sun Kings emerge to perform Sgt. Pepper in its entirety, for 1967 was also the year that Sgt. Pepper arrived... |
I've seen the Sun Kings many times. They're my favorite Beatles tribute band, and have an especially wonderful and unique way of keeping the spirit of the Beatles alive through their music. I've always enjoyed their shows, being a die-hard Beatles fan. But I've gotta say that they really outdid themselves with the most amazing performance of the entire Sgt. Pepper album, complete with partial orchestra and horns and sitar.... |
...for the benefit of Mr. Kite!!! |
What an amazing an emotional performance! The Sun Kings rock! |
here's part of the orchestra that performed with the Sun Kings, including the sitar (for Within You Without You) |
After Sgt. Pepper ended with "A Day in the Life," they did an amazing encore of "All You Need Is Love" complete with children entering the stage with signs that said "All You Need is Love" in several different languages, All of us in the audience swayed to the music and sang, practically yelled, "All you need is love!" It was an amzing, spiritual experience that we all shared. |
It was hard to top the Sun Kings performance, but this Jimi Hendrix tribute dude did a pretty good job. I just wish he could've encored with "Little Wing" which Jimi Hendrix actually wrote about the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival in Monterey |
Here's Big Brother and the Holding Company with Cathy Henderson taking Janis's place). They have stayed true to the '60's songs all these years and didn't disappoint us! |
Then darkness came (and it was difficult to get good pictures) |
The show ended with Jefferson Starship who performed several songs, some of the '70's...they were good, They ended with "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit," saving the best for last!. |
At the end, a bunch of people are dancing on the stage with Jefferson Starship! What a great finale to the Summer of Love show! |
