I do have the marriage certificate for John Slattery and Mary Winifred Brown, as per your reference. And I now see it is also from the VIC Pioneers Index 1837-1888. It tells me the following:

Married 4th May 1880 at St Kilian's Church, Sandhurst (now Bendigo). Both from Ireland. He was 30, she was 31. His father was Daniel Slattery, farmer, mother Hannah Toohey. Her father was Michael Brown, farmer, mother Mary P?????. Bridget Jane Brown was a witness (sister?).

From other certificates:

Edward James Slattery was born 31 August 1889, Sandhurst. Died 16 October 1925, Bendigo. Married Martha Alice Knight 2 October 1907, Bendigo. At the time of death, his issue were Mary Alice (dead), Dorothy May (16), Edward John Lyall (14), Robert (12 - my line), Thomas (10), Henry William (3), Vincent (1).

I have no other information pertaining to the above, except a direct trace from Robert Slattery. Hope this information is useful. Yours certainly was interesting, although I'm not so sure what to do with it! I guess I will be looking to find out more about that ship!

I can tell you that an additional Edward James Slattery was born to John and Mary Winifred in 1889 (died 1925 in Bendigo), the previous issue being John Daniel (7 years), Edward James (dead), Mary Winifred (4 years). I learn from your site there was also another deceased infant, Bartholemew. It is from Edward James that I am a descendant.

Interesting to note you have John Slattery listed as an early pioneer. Can you please explain the term, how he came to be known to you as a pioneer, and how generally a 'pioneer' might have found his way to Australia (any ideas of ship, timing,...?). All I can ascertain is he was born around 1850 in Tipperary and married in 1880 in Sandhurst. Too young to be a convict and perhaps too young to have arrived here as a result of famine in Ireland... unless accompanied by family? His father is Daniel Slattery. It appears his father was a farmer in Ireland.

Stobie

STOBIE POLES

Quintessentially South Australian, the Stobie pole was the answer to South Australia's lack of suitable timber needed to provide poles for stringing up electricity and telephone lines. A particular impetus for their invention was the need for a reliable supply of poles for the expansion of electricity into the countryside.

It was named after its inventor, James Cyril Stobie (1895-1953) who patented his simple though highly effective design in 1924. Included among their advantages is the fact that they are termite proof and have a life span of around 50 years.

As a tribute to James Cyril Stobie, one of his original Stobie poles (from 1924) was erected in 1960 at Angle Vale. Stobie's invention gained him an entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography.

Is he one of 'yours'/'ours'?
