Subject: Reuben's Offence

My Norwich friend has found the following for me:

Norfolk Chronicle and Norwich Gazette of Saturday 7 January, 1843, he was one of 17 prisoners before the Recorder, Isaac Jermy, at the City Sessions on Thursday 3 January:-

"Reuben Thouless, a lad of 15, was charged with stealing a market basket, containing 21 half-pints of butter, the property of Jeremiah Abel, of Ring Road. The case against the prisoner was clearly made out. The young urchin put several adroit questions to some of the witnesses, and apparently with great confidence. He was found guilty, and a former conviction proved against him. His history in crime, according to the gaoler`s books was, that he had twice before been tried, nine times in custody, and six times charged with felony. He was sentenced to seven years` transportation".

Sounds like our lad – if he was 15 in Jan 1843, he was born between 3 Jan 1827 and 2 Jan 1828 if my maths is right.

Tony

Our Reuben was the son of Benjamin (b 1796) and Susannah CHAPMAN. Benjamin's parents were another Benjamin (b abt 1775) and Mary EMMS (m 17 Jul 1796 : yes little Benny was a bit early...). In turn, the older Benjamin's parents were yet another Benjamin (b abt 1738) and Mary SAUNDERS. The oldest Benny's parents were James and Martha (THULES). I don't yet know where they came from or why they went to Norwich.

But the early families in Norwich were THULES, hinting at how the name may have been pronounced. One of them, James b 1775 was christened THULES in the register but used the name THOULESS as an adult. He had become a printer and was my g'g'g'father. The explanation for the change then that he was the first literate family member, his parents signing registers with "their mark". Most other Norwich families used the THOULESS spelling in C19th. Living THOULESSes pronounce the name "thou (ou as in cow) less".

Reuben's Judge Murdered

Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2006

Hello Elizabeth,

My Norwich friend sent me an interesting item. It seems that Reuben fared better than the judge that sentenced him in Norwich. On 28 Nov 1848 both Mr Isaac Jermy (the sentencing judge) and his son were murdered at their home Stanfield Hall, Wymondham, shot by a neighbour, James Rush, who also wounded the son’s wife and her maid. Arrested at his house, Potash Farm, Rush was tried at Norfolk Assizes and sentenced to death.

Rush’s public execution on Castle Hill took place on 21 Apr 1849 “in the presence of an enormous gathering of spectators. Thousands of people entered the city by road…and many thousands were brought in by trains. Cheap return tickets were issued from London to Norwich”.

I suppose they go to the football nowadays for entertainment…

I have just discovered why I could not find the marriage of Margaret Ellen Castley to Reuben in 1876. I now own the Diggers Victorian Index to 1888 and can do searches at home instead of going to the Library (20 kms away) for each look-up.
So I used Castley and there she is, getting married 1876 #4375 to Reuben Thonlis. Also she was born at Taradale 1859 #21266 daughter of Elizabeth Norris and John Castley. She is their third child, others Mary 1855 at Brunswick and Sarah 1857 - 1864 aged 7 at Taradale. Mary wed Thomas Seargeant 1880 #1367 and there is a Jane Castley who wed Robert Pearson 1880 #1366 and gave South Australia as her birthplace (a double wedding, by the reference numbers!)

From: "Anne & Tom Tussup" on Mon, 13 Jun 2005
Hi Elizabeth
Thank you very much for your swift response, and don't worry about my privacy I am interested in learning as much as possible about my family history. I was aware that Thomas Andrew had been married to Henrietta, Farina and Olive but did not know the dates. It appears Gertrude (if they were ever actually married) was between Henrietta and Farina.
As far as I know Thomas Andrew and Gertrude Tussup had three children:
Thomas Henry born on 18/10/1905 in Collingwood Melbourne. I have a copy of his birth certificate which records Thomas and Gertrude were married in Melbourne on 4/10/1905 on the birth record Thomas has given his name as Thomas Tusupa so the child was registered as Thomas Henry Tusupa
Harold (my father) born on 31/12/1906 in New Zealand. My father never had a birth certificate apparently his birth was never registered with New Zealand Births, Deaths & Marriages. As you can imagine this caused my father some problems throughout his life but did not stop him from serving with the Australian Army during World War 2
Basil the youngest brother who was also born in New Zealand. For some unknown reason Basil was left in New Zealand when the family returned to Australia (I have no idea of the dates when the family left and returned to Australia). Basil, Harold and Thomas were reunited a number of times both in Australia and NZ later in life (in the 50's, 60's and early 70's).
With regard to the original 9 children Henry Tussup was killed, I think, overseas in World War 1 (I will check this at Australian War Memorial). Thomas Andrew and Olive Mary eventually settled in Bega, New South Wales, and as far as I know died there (I will also check on this).
It has always been family folklore that "Tussup" was not the original family name. I don't know if your research has thrown up anything on this but if it has I would be very interested to know. It was always said that Spiridione changed it to make it easier in English. I have no idea if there is any truth in this matter.
Many thanks
Tom Tussup
