Wilson

John Wilson 1798 - 27th Feb 1875 aged 77, the son of John Wilson and Mary Phillips wed 30 Apr 1825 to Martha Burgess (1798 - 26th Jan 1864 aged 65 the daughter of John Burgess and Mary Unknown from Langley. Both died at Diamond Creek. Details given by on Wed, 21 Jul 2004.

During the 1830's and 1840's the conditions for people in the rural areas had deteriorated and the Poor Law authorities induced workers to emigrate. Around 1842/43 John & Martha decided to emigrate as a bounty emigrants and were probably recruited by ship agents. After their arrival the shipper would claim from the local governments the bounty offered for having introduced the immigrant. John came out with Carter and Bonus, Emigrant agents, Leaddenall Street, London to emigrate to the Port Phillip District of NSW. The family boarded the Burhampootur a barque from Newcastle, of 550 tons on the 17th October, 1843. It was shipwrecked at Margate and they went back to London and there a week later boarded the Royal Consort of 527 tons, which arrived at Melbourne on 18th February 1844. The amount in the Bounty assistance paid to the shipping agents on behalf of John and Martha Wilson, William aged 17, Elizabeth age 14 years, was 18/14/- each. The rest of the family John Burgess age 11, Martha age 9, Joseph age 7, James age 5 and David age 1 was worth 9/7/- each.
The children were Baptised by Rev F. Pemberton in the Parish Church Langley, Joseph 17 Mar 1830, 3 chn Bap 6 Sep 1835, Joseph Bap 22 May 1836, and James was baptised with his brother David no 343 30 Apr 1842

2. Elizabeth Wilson born 29 Apr 1830 wed 11 August 1854 #2665 to William Wandlass Herbert 1813 - 1876 #1293 aged 63, son of Robert Herbert and Isabella Wanless or Wandless of Rookland near Alwinton Northumberland, lived at Diamond Creek
About 1836 he married Annie Shiel of Morebattle, Roxburgh, Scotland. They had a son Robert and a daughter who died soon after her birth and Annie also died 1841. Williams younger brother married Annies sister Margaret Schiel. In 1844 he took a lease of a farm called "Laings Hill" near Elsdon, Northumberland, he left Robert with his Mother. William came to Melbourne date unknown 1847
