| In newer theories charismatic leaders are often are described more as inspirational characters that inspire their followers to work beyond their self interest and toward greater good. This is a more moderate view than the above and seems to help applying charismatic leadership on lower levels such as in businesses. Historically, charismatic leaders have been viewed only on a large scale such as leaders of nations, movements, religions or huge multinational organization. In reality, this leadership theory can also be used for reviewing leaders of much smaller and inconspicuous groups. In our world today, charismatic leadership has been debated quite often. Due to the mass media and their influence, we often talk about pseudo charismatic leaders. Some people claim that their charisma is not real but created (sometimes under false pretences). However, it does not matter how the charisma is created as long as it is present. Also, many charismatic leaders might stand for ideas that we belief to be criminal or despicable. But they are leaders one way or the other. Examples here would be Adolf Hitler, Idi Amin, Stalin, Sadam Hussein and many others. |
