Against All Odds

Chapter One:

"Happy Birthday, Lizy!" The crowd sang as I blew my candles on my 16th birthday . Jeremy, the guy I was dating (but we're not officially a couple), kissed me on my cheek. My best friend, Tracy, hugged me as they greeted me happy birthday.

"Thank you, thank you," I smiled at them. "Thank you everyone for coming.Well, the party has just begun!" I replied happily then my group of friends cheered.

Everybody scrambled. Someone popped a funky music so loud that every one started to dance. I moved along the crowd and dance along with them to the beat. I was having fun that night. Of course, that was my party.

I never knew that night would change everything. I never expected I would meet someone that could turn my life around. His name was Dave Moffatt. And he's a pop star. He was introduced to me by my friend, Gina, who just lived across my street. She said Dave was staying at her boyfriend's (Mark) block because their family just moved here for their recording firm for a while. Mark invited him over to come and Dave said yes.

"Lizy, this is Dave,"Gina introduced us. "Dave, this is Lizy, the birthday girl."

"Hi," I said as Gina introduced me to him. "Nice to meet you." I noticed he had such cute pair of eyes. And they seem to glow. It sparkled that night.

"Hello, Lizy," Dave replied back with a smile. "Happy Birthday."

Then, we shook our hands. We looked at each other eye to eye. I almost melted. His eyes were warm and he looked kind.I feel lost in myself.Dave smiled at me.

"Ok," Gina interrupted us with a smile. "I'll just leave you kiddos here".

I noticed we were still holding each other's hands. I woke up to reality and pulled my hand back. My face went flushed. I bowed down.

"Oops," I mumbled to myself. "I'm sorry." I can't even look at him. Dave just smiled his gorgeously, cute smile.

"That's ok," Dave looked away, too, smiling. "I'm sorry, too." I guess that night we had this little connection between us about something.I don't know I suddenly felt too shy in front of him.

"Hey, there you are, birthday girl," Jeremy interrupted us. He gave me a quick kiss on the lips. Gosh! In front of Dave!It was embarrassing.I didn't kiss him back. I just looked at Dave and his face suddenly went dull.

"Uhm, Jeremy, I want you to meet Dave. He's new in town. He's a friend of Mark," I told him. Jeremy just gave a quick glance on him.

"Hey,man," Jeremy just mumbled. I wanted to pull away from Jeremy's arms but they were placed around me too tight.

"Hey,Jeremy,"Dave replied back.

I squirmed a little. Jeremy noticed me. "I won't let you go, Lizy. You're safe here in my arms." Then, he gave me a smile.

"Ha!Ha! Very funny. Jeremy, I'm fine," I weakly smiled.Dave faked a smile.

"No,I won't let you go. C'mon, let's dance!" Then he paraded me to the dance floor. I looked at Dave and waved at him to tell him that I'm sorry. Dave just smiled and urged me to go on.

I saw Dave sat at one of those chairs nearby.I saw him watching me and Jeremy slowdanced . Then, suddenly, his friend, Mark, came up to him with Gina. He handed him a beer. I looked away. I don't want Dave to notice me that I am looking at him. Then, I looked back. It seems that he didn't accepted the beer Mark was offering. (I know we're too young to drink beers but someone brought along some stuffs. I just can't let them get rid of it, so I told them it's ok as long as they know their limitations that night.) Then, I realized Dave was a decent guy not like any guy in our age like...uhm, who else? Jeremy? Jeremy smelled a little bit of his perfume and alcohol (beer). How come I never noticed that before? I guessed he took a drink earlier.

I looked back at Dave. Then, just in time, he also looked at me. Our eyes met again. I looked away. I tried to pull away from Jeremy. Jeremy looked at me quizzically.

"What's the matter, Lizy?" he asked. I can smell his breath.

"I needed something to drink," I told him.

"Ok," then he let me go. Thank God.

I went to the refreshment table. I pulled myself a cup of punch. Then, as if I don't know,Dave stood beside me.

"Hi,Liz,"Dave looked at me. "Can I call you Liz?"

I laughed at him. "Sure,Dave. Liz that is."

Dave nodded. I looked at him questioningly.

"So, what's up?" I asked him back.

"Oh,"Dave replied back. "I just wanna say you've got a cool party."

"Thanks." I said sipping a drink. "Are you enjoying yourself?"

"Yeah,"Dave said. "This is great!"

"Oh,"I just nodded. Then, we just stood there at one corner, silence came between us. I wanted him to say something but it seems that he got nothing to say. He just looked around. Then the music played a song I like for now, "Against All Odds" revived by Mariah.

"Oh, I love that song," I suddenly blurted out loud.

Dave looked at me with a smile. "You love that song?"

"Yeah," I told him.

"So, Can we dance?" Dave asked me. I caught up my breath. Is he serious? Dave just looked at me, waiting for my answer. I looked around a little, hoping Jeremy was out of site. Then,I noticed Jeremy was nowhere to be found so I replied back, "Sure."

Then,Dave took my hands. I placed my head on his shoulder.I can feel his broad shoulders. It must have been too strong. He placed his hands on my waist. Then, we slowdanced at the dimly corner of the room. I guessed Dave wanted us to be safe away from Jeremy.

So take a look at me now,
There's just an empty space...

The song sang. Oh, I feel like I was in heaven. I never felt anything like this before. Not to Jeremy but to Dave. My heart skipped a beat. I can't believe that it was just moments ago, we met, and now we're dancing. I was in cloud 9. My heart skipped a beat.

So take a look at me now,
There's just an empty space...

The chorus repeated. Oh, I feel like there's an empty space inside of me. How could this be? I know my parents love me (& I love them, too. FYI,I'm an only child) even though they were gone for the weekend, I suddenly missed them. But deep inside me, the empty space that I was moaning about was not them. I loved my parents, sure. But the empty space I was referring to was...Jeremy. I suddenly don't feel him anymore. He was totally different from me. What I am feeling now is for... Dave.A single tear went down my cheek.

Ohmigosh!I thought. Am I in love with him? On the first sight?

I suddenly pulled away from Dave's arms. Dave looked at me wearily.

"Why?" Dave whispered.

"Nothing," I walked away.

"Liz, wait..." Dave pleaded.

But I didn't look back. I needed space to myself.

What's wrong with me? I thought.

How can you just walked away from me,
And all I can do is watch you leave...

Ugh! The song singing in my head!
