The Royal Navy in Print | ||||||||||||||
THE BERMUDA GAZETTE 30th May, 1795 - A Proclomation from the Admiralty meant to assure Bermudian seamen that they need not fear impressment, which was the Navy's frequent practice elsewhere. 15th August, 1795 - Royal Navy advertises for tenders to build two sloops-of-war. This would be extended to an order for three, the first vessels of a fleet built and crewed locally. 19th March, 1796 - A Proclomation from the Admiralty regarding encouragement of desertion from the Royal Navy ranks (and the particular unpleasantness of this considering the Admiralty's kindness in not impressing Bermudian seamen). 12 November, 1796 - Proclomation from HM the king: War is declared on Spain, with His Majesty encouraging all British vessels (naval or privateer,) to attack the enemy at every opportunity. THE SECOND WORLD WAR Royal Navy advertises for applicants for FAA training. Formerly, not wishing to pay for the trans-Atlantic transport, and possible return, of candidates for enlistment or commission, the RN had not recruited on the colony for many decades at least. This change of policy, around 1943/1944, was more a recognition that the colony had become something of a purveyor of aircrews, having trained 80 pilots for the Air Ministry at RAF Darrell's Island, and sent more than two-hundred candidates for aircrew training and the women's division of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Only later would the first Islander sit for entry into the Royal Naval Academy at the HM Dockyard on Ireland Island (Captain Gilbert Hallam). AN ENGRAVING OF THE HMD FROM A UK PAPER OF 1848 |
