
Side Effects of EDs
General(any/all disorders):
insomnia
depression
isolation
edema(swelling in legs/feet of coe's or stomachs of anorexics/bulimics)
impaired brain function
infertility
other fertility problems (such as frequent miscarriages)
polycystic ovarian syndrome
irregular bowel activities
digestion issues
Any dramatic weight loss:
lanugo (fine feather-like hair growth on arms, face and back)
low blood pressure
drops in blood pressure upon standing/sitting up (causes dizziness and even blackouts)
anemia
hypoglycemia
ketoacidosis(too much acid in the blood stream from burning fat instead of carbs for energy)
kidney infections
kidney failure
low body temperature
loss of menstrual cycles (in women)
easy bruising
seizures
heart irregularities/problems
Anorexia-specific:
muscle atrophy
vitamin/mineral deficiencies
paralysis
osteoporosis
heart irregularities/problems
athritis
liver failure
pancreatitis
thyroid gland deficiencies
decrease in white blood cells
seizures
Bulimia-specific:
esophageal tears/erosions
gastric rupture (may result in death)
gastrointestinal bleeding (such as ulcers)
acid reflux disease
inability to keep any food down
throat and/or vocal cancer
facial swelling
bladder/urinary tract infections
dental problems
seizures
heart irregularities/problems
peptic ulcers
Binge Eating:
high blood pressure
excessive weight gain
diabetes
hypoglycemia
nausea
fatigue
increased risk for cancer
And ANY eating disorder can result in...
