Chateau-sur-Mer

Was built as an Italianate-style villa for China trade merchant William Shepard Wetmore.  It was the most palatial residence in Newport from its completion in 1852 until the appearance of the Vanderbilt houses in the 1890s. Mr. Wetmore died in 1862, leaving the bulk of his fortune to his son, George Peabody Wetmore, and a generous allowance for his daughter, Annie Derby Wetmore.  During the 1870s, they redecorate the house in the Second Empire French style by architect Richard Morris Hunt.  George Peabody Wetmore had a distinguished political career as Governor of Rhode Island and as a United States Senator.
He died in 1921.  Were survived by their two daughters, who never married.  The Preservation Society purchased the house in 1969.
After that, we stopped for lunch.  Then, took a walk along the cliff, called "Cliff Walk" by the Bailey's Beach.  It was fun!!

Then, we went to Bowen's Wharf, waterfront shopping mall and marine district, established in 1760.  A variety of unique shops, galleries, restaurants, marine businesses, and also activities & festivals all year-round.

Lot of things to do in Newport, not enough if just only a day or two.  Whether we were drawn here to enjoy the music festivals, yachting regattas, mansion tours (there are more than 15 mansion), professional tennis at the Newport Casino or a day at the beach, Newport offers a picturesque location to relax and enjoy:-).
