Climbers come from all over the world to experience the magic and
beauty of climbing at Red Rocks, but they often have only a few
days to climb and don't want to invest in a huge guidebook.
That's why Todd Swain, author of the popular Rock Climbing Red
Rocks, has taken the "best of the best" out of that
volume and put it into this smaller book. At less than half the
cost, Classic Rock Climbs: Red Rocks is perfectly suited to the
traveling climber on a tight budget, providing information on 200
classic climbs at this world-renowned area. From one-pitch
clip-ups in The Gallery to multi-pitch routes in Black Velvet
Canyon, this book will keep you climbing for days, but leave you
with enough cash to hit the casino buffets a few more times.

Best General
Guidebook for DC climbing, August 3, 2001
Reviewer: fusionboy from Alexandria, VA
This new guidebook is the best single guidebook for any DC based
climber - Horst covers all of the major area's within range of
Basecamp (Seneca, the New, Great Falls) and some of the other
areas which currently don't have good guidebooks(chief among them
Old Rag). While the individual guidebooks for the major areas are
certainly much better(neither Seneca, and especially the New
don't condense themselves well) - if your passing through the DC
area, or getting a feel for the DC climbing scene, this book will
point you in the right directions, and save you both space and
money. Just buy it at a local store.

Comprehensive,
March 4, 1998
Reviewer: A reader from Spring House, PA
This thick guidebook has every area covered in Joshua Tree. There
are no descriptions of the routes, but you can't expect that with
the sheer number covered. Topos of most of the routes show bolts
and sometimes gear sizes are included. The protection ratings are
not given, i.e. G,PG,R,X. If you want just a basic source with
everything in it, get this guide. I'd recommend getting the
individual areas covered by Alan Bartlett's series, he has
detailed descriptions of the routes for each area covered.

Often considered the mecca of American rock climbing, Utah has
almost as many routes as it has inhabitants. This is best
reflected in Stewart Green's hefty guide, which weighs in at a
whopping 537 pages. Green has indeed taken an admirable stab at
rounding up descriptions, photos, and beta for every route worth
mentioning. He takes the reader from the remote corners of Castle
Valley and the Island in the sky to the oft-traveled crags of
Salt Lake's Little and Big Cottonwood canyons. Route descriptions
are thorough and easily understood. More importantly, most of the
route maps are superimposed over actual photographs to insure
that readers actually find the walls they are after.
Book Description:
Utah, with its spectacular slickrock canyon country and towering
Wasatch Front, boasts a diverse selection of rock climbing areas
and routes. With this comprehensive guidebook, climbers can

sandstone big-walls, difficult limestone testpieces in American
Fork and Logan canyons, and the fragile desert spires surrounding
Moab. Provides detailed maps, cliff topos, route descriptions and
beta, and travel and camping information.

Reviewer: Josh A Gage from Bozeman, MT

I though that this was a very usefull book for climbing. I used
it primarily for climbing Blue Mounds in Minnesota. It had the
majority of the known routes but unfortunatley not all of them.
As far as the rattings are concerned they all seemed accurate and
route descriptions were also great. The photos and detailed
descriptions made finding the routes very easy. I give this book

"The last best place" might not be the heartland for
American climbing, but visiting climbers can be assured of two
things: nice views and plenty of privacy. Randall Green has
gathered Montana's prominent climbers to compile a thorough and
easy-to-use guide that covers the local crags for Missoula,
Helena, Butte, and Bozeman. He also guides you through remote
areas like Stone Hill, Rattler Gulches, and Montana's highest
point, Granite Peak. Route descriptions are brief yet
informative, and successfully handle the delicate balance between
telling so much that the adventure is lost and telling so little
that you're gearing up for disaster. --Ben Tiffany

Summit
Bagging Made Easy, June 4, 2000
Reviewer: David M. Garrett from San
Antonio, Texas
As a frequent visitor to Rocky Mountain National Park I'm always
looking for the best in solid, compact field guides. Gerry
Roach's little gem is an good example. The text and tone of the
book benefits from Roach's personal familiarity with the trails
and summmits described.
This is an excellent guide to summit approaches for those
interested in bagging the major peaks in Rocky Mountain National
Park. Roach provides his readers with concise information on
distance, elevation, grade, class and snow steepness with a
modest amount of editorial. For nearly every peak Roach provides
alternate roots suitable for both the casual or technical
climber. The book is punctuated with black and white photographs
of a number of the better known mountains in the park and their
key landmarks.
Those intimately familiar with RMNP will most benefit from this
book. Descriptions are generally terse and primiarly dedicated on
how to get from Point "A" to Point "B". The
book suffers from lack of either topographical or overview maps.
For the reader more interested in hiking or backpacking, as
opposed to bagging summits, Dannen's "Hiking Rocky Mountain
National Park" (8th Ed.) is the best I've found and a much
more thorough and enjoyable read in a pocket format.
