Singer-SriLankan International Rugby Sevens organised by Kandy Sports Club and sponsored

Kenyan strong center Oscar Osir paved the way for the Kenyan victory with 2 brilliant tries while the third one was scored by Ben Nyambu. For the Portuguese Wolves, captain Antonio Cunha and center Diego Mateus scored tries. Kenya is no longer a surprise in Sevens rugby after collecting victories the last two yeast over Samoa (28-20 at the Commonwealth Games in 2002), Wales (19-0 at George in 2002) and Australia (15-12 at Hong Kong in 2003). Two teams from Australia (Potoroos) and New Zealand (Centurion) had to be invited at the last minute to replace the two spots left by the withdrawals of Netherlands and Spain. Cup quarter final saw New Zealand Centurion beat South Korea. 27 points (4 goals) to 7 (1 goal). In the second quarter-final defending champions Portugal drabbed Australian Potoroos by 52 points (5 goals, 4 tries) to nil. In the third match Kenya beat Hong Kong by 36 points (3 goals, 3 tries) to 12 (1 goal, 1 try) after leading 22-0 at half time. In the last Cup matchup Cook Islands beat Chinese Taipei 31 points (3 goals, 2 tries) to 15 (3 tries). At half time Cook Islands led 12-10. The crowd was static watching the local team, (knicknamed "The Tuskers") beating the strong German team in the Plate semifinals after trailing 19-0. Tries by Alexander Pipa, Timur Tekkal and Shen Smith gave the Europeans a conforting score but the locals didn't give up and tries by Kandy players Prasad Chathuranga , Pradeep Liyanage (2) Radhika Hettiarachchi converted by Amjad Buksh secured the victory. The Plate final was less dramatic and the Tuskers defeated Belgium with a convincingly score of 33-19. send us an article contact the boy |
