| Menstruation and the voice: During menstruation, the vocal folds may swell. Depending on how much this affects your voice, you may not want to sing for a short period. If you try to practice, and it just doesn't feel right due to the swollen folds, stop and try again the next day. Sometimes, an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen may alleviate the swelling. If this doesn't when you have a lesson, you may need to inform your teacher and reschedule or cancel. Some professional performers actually have to cancel performances due to symptoms related to menstruation. Maturing of the voice: Singers don't reach their full physical maturity until about age 25. Most big voices don't mature until about 30-35. Dramatic voices amy not mature until even later. Lighter voices mature before the heavier voices do, but they fade faster. |
