This is Etienne Vidocq, magician. Miss Flora once performed as his on-stage assistant, "La Lapinette."* You can imagine what that costume was like! (What do you think inspired Hefner?) For the finale, I would pop out of a giant top hat, nibbling on a carrot and wiggling my nose. After the show, I used to curl up in his lap, munching still on the carrot (hey, they are good for you!), and coo "Qu'est ce qui se passe, Vidocq?"** Alas, it was not to last. One day, a trick misfired, and he disappeared into his own hat. "Love may be magic, but magic is an illusion." * tr. = "the little bunny rabbit" ** tr. = "What's up Vidocq?" |
