×Demonstrations×
A demonstration is an 8-10 minute presentation made by a pair of 4-H members. It usually demonstrates how to make something such as food, a craft, or a project. Also, sometimes the members will demonstrate a skill but they must be careful that it is not an illustrated talk. Members build on their public speaking skills while learning how to work with a partner. A demo is judged on originality, presentation, practicality, and usefulness. The time limit is the same for seniors and juniors, with penalties for being over or under the time limit. Competition levels for juniors range from club to regional, while senior members can go all the way to provincial competitions.
×Speak-N-Shows×
Speak-N-Shows are a one person demonstration. It's a presentation that can be a demonstration or an illustrated talk that is delivered by one 4-H member. The topic must have an agriculture or food theme so that the members learn and teach about what makes the 4-H youth program unique, it's connection to the agriculture industry. The presentaion can take the form on a demonstration in which the 4-H member teaches by showing and explaining things. The 4-H member describes what he/she is doing and makes something or shows a technique using ingredients, tools, etc. A speak-n-show presentation does not have to conclude with a finished product, the end result could be a learned skill/techique. An illustrated talk tells how something is done & includes visuals. In an illustrated talk, flip chats, posters, pictures, models, slides, flannel board, chalkboard, power point program, or real objects are used. There is no finished product. Illustrated talk is similar to a demonstration except that visual aids are used instead of making an actual product. Either form of presentation is acceptable for a Speak-n-Show presentation. The time limit for the presentations are: Juniors 5-10 mins, Seniors 10-20 minutes.
