×Public Speaking×

While not a favourite event for many members, public speaking is one of the most useful skills to be gained from 4-H.
All speeches should include a bit of research, some humour, and all information should relate to the topic.
A junior speech should be between 3-5 minutes and have a topic that is approriate for the age of the member. Some examples of topics would be:
- My Pet
- My Vacation
- An interesting experience
- A researched topic, ie.owls
Junior members have the opportunity to compete in Club, District and Regional competitions.

A senior speech should be more mature and detailed, lasting between 5-7 minutes. Some examples of topics would be:
- A social issue, ie. smoking.
- A researched topic, ie. superstitions.
- An unusual experience, ie. a 4-H exchange trip.
Senior members can compete at Club, District, Regional and Provincial levels.
Senior members also have to do a 1-2 minute impromptu speech after all the regular speeches are done. The topic remains the same for all speakers and each one is told the topic, and then given one minute to think about it. Then, they have to immediately think on their feet, and speak in front of the audience, about that topic. It is a nerve-racking experience for every competitor, but very useful later in life!
