Our unit's morning activity after breakfast was the fire fighter's challenge. The first activity there involved passing buckets of water along in a team, comprised of our unit and another unit, in order to fill a large tub. Then, we went to the smokehouse. Here we had to crawl through a maze filled with theatre smoke, and find two dummies that were hidden. I was at the back of the line, and yet I kept bumping into walls. Then, there was an obstacle course involving carrying around a dummy on a ladder being used as a stretcher. After that, we went to an activity that was simply spraying each other with small fire hoses attached to water tanks we put on our backs like backpacks. I got quite wet along with the other Scouts in our unit, but of course we really drenched the leaders! Next, we played a game of soccer involving moving the ball with life-size fire hoses. Once again I got drenched! The next activity involved carrying around a fire hose on an obstacle course. One of the Scouters running this part of the event was rather gruff and rude to me, eventhough I was trying my best. For the final activity we, as a team, had to take three fire hoses, attach them together, then spray it at a target before taking it apart. Despite the rude Scouter, the Fire Fighters Challenge was one of my favourite events at CJ, because of how wet we got.
We went back to our site for lunch and then I had a shower -- with a bathing suit this time! That afternoon our unit went to the Clam Bake. This took place several kilometres to the west on the shore of Malpeque Bay, which we had to walk to. While walking there, I picked up a couple of shells, as well as a red rock, which I took home with me. We were intregued by all the seaweed on the shore. The first part of the Clam Bake involved tying fisherman's knots as part of a relay race. Then, we went to hear a local 77-year-old fisherman talk about his career catching lobster, which was really interesting. We then listened to another old man who had a black dog with him, who talked about a major storm that took place at sea many years ago. Then, we went to learn about habitats from Environment Canada. We did an activity with them which involved everybody sitting on each other in a circle (click here to see an example of this). I did not really participate in that part because I had only boys in front of me and behind me, and I couldn't move to another part of the circle. (Of course things would've been different if there were girls in front of me and behind me!) I just pretended to sit, becuase I wasn't comfortable with a boy sitting on me and me sitting on another boy.
At the end of it all, we went to sample some boiled mussels -- not baked clams. They weren't bad, but I wouldn't want to eat them again. We then listened to some music from a local guitar player. I was really tired by this point and I laid down, almost falling asleep. After a nice, much-needed rest, we walked back to Cabot Park. This time we were really spread out, so I had some nice time to myself to think about life. Also, one of the other Scouts and I sang The Monorail Song from The Simpsons over and over to pass the time on the way back.
