There were other ways to end the war, which diminishes the historical significance. In the postwar years, both cities rose like phoenixes rising from their ashes to become leading cities in Japan. It simply wasn't worth it to destroy countless lives and start a new generation of warfare, a generation more dangerous than ever before.
