Political Significance
Dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki led to the Cold War and the nuclear arms race. Suddenly, the major world powers began nuclear programs.

Following the supposition that the bombings ended the war, a new government system began in Japan. In the years immediately following the war, Japan was occupied by the Americans. Afterward, Japan became a constitutional monarchy. The Emperor continues to play the symbolic role that he played during the occupation but has the same amount of power he had during the war-none.
