Moon River, by Andy Williams

In 1609, Henry Hudson of England, and a crew of about twenty men were Map of the Hudson Valleysailing on board the Half Moon, in search of a quicker passage to China.  It wasn't until he was 150 miles up river that he realized this was not the course that would lead to his destination. The sailing logs and maps were key in the colonization of the valley in the 1600's. While the area was originally named New Amsterdam, it was under British rule. During the revolutionary war, the Hudson River played an important, though not one of the most decisive roles, in achieving freedom. Because the river was used to deliver supplies and troops for American forces, a full scale effort was made by the colonists to hold the river. In 1780, Benedict Arnold, attempted to pass off plans for West Point to the British, for 20,000 pounds sterling, before being discovered and making a narrow escape. George Washington set up his headquarters in Newburgh in 1782, and it remained there through the end of the revolutionary war. Washington pleaded with the new government for a training academy, after seeing the effects that the lack of properly trained officers had on his troops. It wasn't until after his death that West Point would be established as a military academy in 1802.

United States Military Academy at West Point holds the distinction of not United States Military Academy at West Pointonly being the oldest continuously manned fort in the country, since it was founded in 1778, but also for being the nation's oldest military training facility, since 1802. Over 2.5 million visitors flock their annually to view the Hudson Valley, pistols that once belonged to George Washington, and inside the Cadets Chapel, the largest working church organ in the world and original regiment flags dating back to the Civil War.

Lyndhurst, is one of the many great estates overlooking the Hudson River. It was designed in 1838, and today is claimed to be one of the best examples of LyndhurstGothic Revival residential architecture in the United States. The home was originally built and owned by General William Paulding, former mayor of New York City. In 1864, the estate was purchased by George Merritt, a prosperous merchant and patent holder, and set forth with renovations that nearly doubled the main house in size. Railroad tycoon, Jay Gould, purchased the estate next, adding little to the design of the estate. The last private owner of Lyndhurst was his daughter Helen, who willed the grand estate to the Nation Trust for Historic Preservation upon her death in 1961.

The Shawangunk Wine Trail is located along the Hudson River, spanning 60 miles long. There are seven major wineries along the trail, with a sampling of Brotherhood Winerysmaller associate wineries in between. The oldest of these wineries is Brotherhood Winery, which was established in 1839 by John Jaques. This winery is also noted as being the oldest winery in continuous operation in the country. When the winery was sold in 1886, the new owner added an additional underground cellar, setting the winery for another record as the largest underground cellar in the nation. When prohibition hit, the winery remained in operation, by producing sacramental wines. It wasn't until 1987, that the winery would cease operating as a family business. The new owners brought fresh expertise and talent to the winery, enabling them to remain a premier wine provider for the the oncoming century.
