~Not That Bad~ |
Hey! This is my first FanFic posted on the site, So I hope y'all like this! Please send me feedback HERE and Enjoy! This story btw, is about my character Carrie Monaghan and Remus Lupin when they are both kids living in the same village, and the prejudices that they see. |
Her boots clumped against her legs as she ran through the forest, happily thinking of seeing her father, who had just declared his urgency in the woods. A head she saw an animal, lying on its side and apparently not moving. Still she ran on, but now towards the creature, her curiosity drawn towards its matted fur and paws. She gasped when she came near, and in her excitement of another pet, she called, "Papa! Papa!" No sooner had she called she then saw the familiar frame of her tall and well-built father come crashing through the dense forests towards her. But he didn't wear a smile pairing to hers "Stay away!" he gasped, bending down beside the fallen creature. Carrie saw his fur was grey brown colour with pale coloured paws. His coat was extremely matted from the summer down pour that had occurred the night before. Carrie saw her father take out his wand and tap the creature whilst muttering something under his breath. "Can we keep the doggie papa?" He chuckled slightly, "No Honey Bee, no we can't. He has to get back to his owners, they're very worried." Before Carrie could open her mouth to protest any louder, she saw the familiar body of her brother come storming towards them. "Pop! Sorry…she just ran away.' "It's Ok, please take her back now. I have to get to Calon." Carrie took Daani's hand but her mind was still curious with why Papa couldn't provide her with another pet to care for. Next she wondered where her Papa was going with the doggie, as he walked past the gnarled old logs and deeper into the forest. Her mind cast this aside as they came up to various challenges like the frog patch and the steep dried up river which took them through Hunter's Wood to their cottage. "Try not to run off again Carrie, you know how much Pop doesn't like it." "I know, I thought I was going to get another pet." "Maybe he was afraid you were going to keep this one." Once again, before Carrie could reply they were at the large stone wall. Daani pulled aside the large curtain of ivy and honeysuckle that acted as part of the fallen wall and entered their large back garden. Carrie loved playing in the garden, as there were flowers of every colour and smell surrounding the lush green carpet of grass. Carrie especially loved the conservatory, which joined onto the kitchen, with all Papas' brewing and potion herbs. She ran over towards the sand stone patio and sat down to face her small doll's house and began to take the little witch and make her stir her cauldron. Around her in the beating summer sun were cauldrons small and large full of lilies, lavender, daisies and roses. As Daani zoomed around on his Junior Cleensweep 66 their father Connor Monaghan apparated next to Carrie. "Papa! Where's the doggie? Is he well?" "Yes, perfectly honey. But do you understand why you can't come with me? That doggie could have nasty things in him." Then he paused, "Thank God she didn't know it was Remus." "What about Remus?" she asked, curious at the mention of her friend, Remus Lupin. "Carrie! Do you also remember what I said about listening to other people's thoughts? I know you can't help it Honey bee." With that Connor gently bent down and kissed his daughter, showing a rare moment of tenderness he only reserved for his children. Daani whooshed up next to his father and Connor smiled and said to him, "Playing for Ireland in a few years will you Champ?" "Nah Pop! The Wimbourne Wasps!" "Fair enough." Connor said, taking off his dragon hide gloves and fishing deep into his robes, "Daani, why don't you take Carrie and Matty for a walk to the Village and get me some Tiger Root. You may have some change for a trip to MayQueen's." He smiled and winked at his 11-year-old son as Daani took the money and ran inside. Carrie followed him into the house and passed the cleaner, Losti, who simply scowled at her young mistress. Carrie crossed the kitchen and went into the lighter hall, where Daani and his collie Matty were waiting for her. They set off through the forest, sticking to the sand stone path their father had laid a few years ago. The path was lined with wild fire and looked beautiful in the afternoon light. They reached their gate with the small sign 'Tipperary Cottage - Private property.' The path opened up after that and became a large track that lead to the village of Oakhampton. "Daani, is Losti going to have a baby?" "Yes why?" "Who's the daddy? Is it that Muggle in the village." "I think so." They walked in silence for a while, only laughing when Daani pulled a face at the country smells and Matty's determination to catch the butterflies. Once in the village they headed to the Non-Muggle part of Oakhampton, known as Haven. After purchasing the Tiger Root and some sweets from MayQueens they were about to go and sit next to the Enchanted Fountain when a fight broke out, not a usual one, but Carrie could hear the angry voices coming from a group of wizards. They all held weapons Carrie hadn't seen before and seemed to be looking for someone, or rather hunting. Daani stood up immediately and handed Matty's lead to Carrie. Carrie felt her heart pump in her chest louder and louder each beat as she watched the wizards gather up their unfamiliar weapons and clash with some others, from the ministry, Carrie presumed. Daani went to try and help and Carrie screamed as she saw him come out five minutes later with an extremely bloodied nose and uncoordinated feet. It was then he came running up to her and hugged her with one hand whilst wiping his nose with his dirty T-shirt. He tried his best to reassure his eight-year-old sister but to no avail. Carrie looked at all the angry wizards and heard what they thought; "Flippin Werewolf, right here! We'll see about that!" Werewolf? Carrie thought as Daani continued to hold her and she helped to wipe away the blood from his nose. It was just then that they saw their father run in, his wand drawn, his face pale, but determined. Then Ara Lupin pulled them away from the fountain and the fighting and took them into the nearby apothecary, from where they had come out of 10 minutes ago. "Oh! Daani! Look at you. Here…" she said and tapped his nose, which immediately stopped and she mopped up his blood with tisane water. "What's wrong Mrs. Lupin?" Carrie whispered, looking at her as she finished up on Daani and began to look at her, "Oh, it's just the Haven workers, it happens now and again." She smiled but it was a weak one, which was more of a comfort smile than a genuine one. Then Connor Monaghan burst in and ran towards his children. "Champ! Honey Bee! Thank God!" He hugged them both tightly and when he pulled away he was sporting a shiny right eye. "Has it stopped Connor?" Ara asked, a strangely haunted tone in her voice. "Yes, but they may come after you, they don't like, you know, in the village." "But it's the same everywhere! We just want him to be safe, he's perfectly normal, and he wouldn't harm a fly." "I know, Ara. Calon's out there trying to talk round Newt Scamander into not taking him away. I now he's harmless, he's only a pup. Besides, Dumbledore'll testify to Newt that he's harmless; he's just done his Second year hasn't he? "Well, yes, but they could expel him…" "No, they won't. I know Dumbledore; we meet often to discuss Ministry affairs. He wouldn't throw him out. He's settled there." Ara Lupin smiled at Connor as the back door opened and in ran Calon and Remus Lupin. Remus looked pale and tired as normal, but Calon looked ashen faced and slightly scared, which wasn't his usual familiar. Calon was tall with brown thick hair that he tied back into a ponytail. His hazel eyes were always cheery and he had slight side burns that complemented his handsome face. Remus was the spitting image of his father apart from the side burns and ponytail, unlike his mother who was slender and petite with fair curly hair that fell past her shoulders. She had sparkling violet eyes and full lips, and always a kind expression on her face. But now she looked nervous and scared and she continually bit her nails of her left hand. When she saw Remus she ran towards him and threw her arms around his skinny shoulders and began to cry as she too looked over his thin and pale face. Calon turned to Connor and practically whispered, "They got our cottage Connor, it's nearly all gone." "The Haveners?" "Yes. But they don't even understand! Just look at him," Calon said, turning to Remus, who had sat silently next to Daani and Carrie, "he couldn't harm anyone, not like that. I wish they'd just understand!" he punched his left hand with his right fist before taking his sobbing wife in his arms and rocking her. Then he continued "The ministry have put a repellent charm on the wreckage, but the Haveners aren't going to stay away for long. They know about Werewolves, Connor, they know what they can do. We may have to leave, we couldn't survive the backlash and isolation again." "No, Calon, you're not leaving this place. You're both well respected in the village, Ara's the Nurse, and you are in the Department of Houses and Architecture; you made all the houses here! You can't leave. You can stay with us. There's more than enough room, and I expect Remus could help Daani prepare for Hogwarts." He turned and winked at Remus, who raised his head and smiled. "We couldn't Connor! We just couldn't!" "You can and you will! That's final, you're staying." Carrie looked at her father in awe, she loves him dearly, and even more so when he offers to help like that, he emitted such power she couldn't help but smile. They all walked rather slowly back to Tipperary Cottage, as sun had set and Calon and their father had retrieved what they could from Remus' cottage, which included all of Remus' Hogwarts belongings and most of his other stuff. Remus, Daani and Carrie had walked a head slightly, Daani and Remus carrying Remus' trunk and talking about Hogwarts quietly. Carrie listened intently to the conversation, as in three years she would too be leaving her father to go to Hogwarts, although she was very excited, she didn't want to leave him alone. But she had the feeling he wouldn't be. The next few weeks were fun for Carrie and Daani, as not only did they have Remus to play with but also Remus' three friends James Potter, Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew all came over and they camped in the woods for a few nights. The next few days were taken up with preparing (apart from Carrie) to go to Hogwarts. It was these days that Carrie enjoyed the most because the talk of Hogwarts and all the magic was very enjoyable, and even though she was five years younger she wasn't left out of anything. James even gave her, her first flying lesson and she loved it, plus getting a compliment from James like, 'that was great' made her feel like she was flying right that second, her heart was so light. ~~~To Page 2~~~ |
