Bruge was another unplanned stop, recommended to us by several travelers along the way. Only 3 hours from Amsterdam, it was a delightful small town stop. This year it won the title of 'Cultural Center of Europe,' causing a great influx of tourism and interest in this once-defunct medieval city.
It retains the cobbled streets and canals of its trade center days, almost 700 years ago! With immediate access to the tiny towns of the Belgian coastal countryside, it offers attractions for those interested in history via WWI sites and well-preserved medieval architecture, and modern culture for those interested in the world-famous Belgian beer! |
