Erin's Journal for 10-06-02

Sunday was a free day at several of the local museums, so we got up and headed out after a quick breakfast with Helena and Andreas. Our first stop was at Konigsplatz, or King's Plaza, where a number of impressive buildings line the streets. Since it was raining, we didn't linger or take photos though, and quickly headed on to the Neue Pinakotek, one of three wonderful art collections in the same area. The Alte and Moderne Pinakoteks are also highly recommended spots, but we'd decided to focus on one museum rather than racing through all of them. We'd selected the Neue as it held paintings of the 18th to early 20th centuries, and the Moderne Pinakotek, the most recently opened (just last September), had a long line already.

We each got an audioguide and started off through the 24 rooms of paintings, and spent about 3 hours looking at a very good collection of paintings. We even took some photos (no flash, of course!) of our favorites, and at the end bought a book about the museum so we'd be able to know more about them. Afterward we debated trying for the Moderne, but the line was still long, the rain was pouring down, and we only had 2 hours before it would close. We chose not to go there, and instead headed back home eat lunch and pick up our stuff to get more pictures ready for the website.

We hurried down to the internet cafe, but once again our luck with computers turned bad and we hit a roadblock. The software was still there, but the computer again failed to see the equipment. And since our friend of the day before was not here, nobody in the cafe was capable of helping us. Frustrated, we settled for some emailing and called it quits for Munich. We had made plans to meet Helena and Andreas for dinner, so we quickly walked back and found them relaxing after a day trip to the nearby lakes at the south of the city center. The 4 of us headed just 2 minutes away to a Turkish restaurant they liked. The atmosphere was wonderful, with candles in brickwork niches and cozy lighting throughout. Occasionally they have bellydancers, but not tonight. We each tried something from the specials menu, and were very pleased with the results - dinner was excellent! By the time we were done, though, it was late, so we called it a night soon after returning to their place.
One of my favorite paintings from the Neue Pinakotek, titled Franzia and Italia
