Erin's Journal for 10-12-02 This was the day we were going to attend a bike tour for more info on the city, but the day dawned rainy and cold. We ate our crappy breakfast again downstairs because it was now included in our room price, then talked to Mindy and Alex again. They too were debating whether to stay on Sunday now that the weather was ugly, and we all agreed we'd stay Sunday if it got clear enough for the bike tour. Then Glenn and I headed off to the internet cafe and spent almost 4 hours resizing photos and transferring journals to the website master files. We didn't have time to put web pages together that everyone could see, but at least the materials were now there to be used in making pages later. The cost of this internet cafe was considerable, and we knew we'd find a cheap EasyEverything internet cafe in Amsterdam for the last few days of our stay in Europe. Satisfied with our labors, we decided to explore the city a bit more even though it was raining. We saw some windmills listed on our map on the other side of town, and headed for those. As we got to the far side of town, we noticed a hair salon with reasonable prices, and both of us felt a little shaggy. We stopped in there for an hour, and both came away a bit more light-headed. Then we continued toward the windmills. Soon we also passed a grocery store, and stopped in for more bottled water and snacks. Due to the constant cold, we haven't been drinking as much water as we should, so we refilled here. Finally we made it to the outer canal and the windmills, but were sadly disappointed with the small drab things. They were very old style and not a breath of wind was stirring them. So we quickly turned back and started heading for the warmth and dryness of our room. After a bit of turning about in the rain, we found our way back and warmed up in the room for a bit before heading out to find dinner. We checked back with the restaurant of the night before to see what daily special was listed, but it was the same. We went back to the restaurant at our hotel instead and ordered some hot stews, Glenn's with the chicken I'd had the first night there, and mine a fish stew. Both were tasty, and while we ate, we shared some good conversation with yet another American couple, this time a military couple overseas stationed in Germany. Chris and Dara had been over here for a couple of years, and loved the ability to travel to new spots for 4 day weekends very often. They were a lot of fun to talk to, so we sat there long after our meal was finished and conversed till we were all tired. This time when we crashed, I avoided the Nyquil in the hopes that my cold was on the mend and would allow me to sleep. I was right! |
