Erin's South Africa Journals - 11-05-02

This morning we woke up for a chore day. We'd been waiting so long to find a place to do our laundry, that this was our first and only priority for the day. We first wandered down the road a bit and tried out the News Cafe for breakfast. It was excellent, and we enjoyed a huge egg & french toast breakfast with smoothies to further spoil ourselves. The exchange rate of 10 Rand to the dollar has made things here pleasantly affordable, so we splurged a bit. We stopped by a Woolworths grocery store on the way back to stock the kitchen for the next few days, as this saves a ton of money on meals (and you don't have to leave home!).
Once we put our stuff away, we started right in on the laundry. I was in charge of it this time, and Glenn used his free time to do some catch-up on journals. It was only occasionally sunny, but I sat out and took advantage while talking to some of the other travelers staying there. We have to be careful in the sun, as our malaria pills make us extra sensitive to burns (as if I needed help in that capacity!).
After the laundry was done, we continued to relax for a bit before taking a leisurely walk along the road to a nearby internet cafe. We planned to stop there and spend about an hour on emails, then head to the beach, right across the street. Wrong again! Glenn found that the network administrator of this fantastically fast internet spot could transfer our photos from our camera cards to a cd, and he also could resize the photos so we could put them on the website! We'd had so much trouble finding places like this that we decided to spend a bit more time and get our journals and pics transferred to the site so we could update it. Well, we had some success -the most important task was getting the pictures burned on a cd so we could reuse the cards in our cameras, and this got done. But we had trouble getting our journals transferred, and had to do a lot of cleanup on the files before they could be transferred. I spent almost 90 minutes just doing that, and selected a few pictures to transfer as well, but when I tried to get our website to take these new files, the server wouldn't respond!!! So after almost 4 hours and all that effort, we didn't get anything new on our website. By then it was dark and we were tired, so we decided to try again the next day and went to the hostel to join the BBQ (braai) in progress there.
The food was burnt, but the salads were great and we had fun talking with the other travelers and listening to the few fireworks being shot off for Guy Fawkes day (don't know what he did or who he was, really  - just an excuse to throw a party, I guess!).
We went to bed late but happy, with clean clothes finally!
