Glenn's Journal for 11-3-02 to 11-4-02 - Nairobi to Cape Town
Sunday is our last full day in Nairobi and it should be quiet as most stores are closed and people are off to church. We relaxed in the morning before heading out to the internet cafe for e-mails and see if we could work on uploading any data. We had no luck with uploading any data but we did work on e-mails for a while. After the internet cafe we stopped into the grocery store for a few things before returning to the hotel where we worked on journals and read our books. Another relaxing day enjoying the beautiful weather. We also had to pack today as we have to catch a taxi at 7:30 am to the airport where we will catch our flight to South Africa. Tonight we enjoyed dinner before playing some pool at the bar. We also watched the end of the New York marathon while sitting in the bar. We called it an early night due to the early morning and long day we had ahead. We still don't have any accommodation in Cape Town so we will have to work that as we arrive.
11-4-02
We are up early for showers and breakfast before we meet the taxi driver at 7:30 am. We arrive at the airport around 8:15 am, go through security, check in, and arrive at the gate around 8:45 am while waiting for our 10:00 am flight. Today we fly through Johannesburg to arrive in Cape Town at 5:15 pm. We also have a one hour time change today. Upon arriving into Johannesburg Kevin, whom we met on safari last week, was nice enough to meet us at our departing gate where we chatted for a while before having to catch our flight. Kevin also recommended a hostel in Cape Town called the Sunflower Spot, which is listed in our Let's Go guidebook. We will have to check it out. We then continued on our way to Cape Town arriving near our scheduled time of 5:15 pm. Once we entered the airport we needed to make phone calls to check on accommodations and find transport into town. Right next to the luggage carousel was a transport and accommodation office, so we checked it out while we waited for our luggage. The gentleman was very helpful in showing us where the ATM was (I needed South African Rand), and where I could buy a phone card. Upon my return I headed over to the phone booths to check on accommodations. I called a few places including the Sunflower Spot, and went with Kevin's recommendation as they had free airport pickup. I thanked the gentleman for all his help and we went outside to wait for our ride. The ride showed up a half hour later and off we were to our hostel. The Sunflower Spot is located in Green Point within walking distance of the waterfront and a short ride either into town or to the nicer beaches. Once we arrived the host was very friendly, as well as the staff, and we settled into a twin room for 170 SA Rand ($17) per night. We spent a little time at the bar before calling it an early night. |
