Erin's South Africa Journals - 11-10-02

Today we met up with Chris and Denise, finally! We'd planned this for a couple of months now, so it was exciting to finally see them and head over to Plettenberg Bay. They came to pick us up at 10am, and we said a thankful farewell to our hostess at the apartment, referring Chris and Denise to her in case they wanted a nice budget alternative on the night before their flight home! We took off along the coastline, and had a couple of wrong turns before finding our way to the N2, Garden Route of South Africa.
First stop along the way was the wine country. The wine region is just a short ride outside of Cape Town, and featured lots of beautiful wineries. We picked one at random to do a tasting at, Eikendal. This turned out to be a good pick, as we liked several of their wines and bought a few bottles to take with us to the condo in Plett (to enjoy throughout the next 2 weeks). Then we continued on along the Garden Route, which actually doesn’t start for about half the journey to Plettenberg Bay. Before that, you’re travelling through beautiful farm country with acres of grain & wheat, backed up by mountains on one side and the distant ocean on the other. Then once we reached the Garden Route, we could see more of the ocean as we drove alongside small seaside towns with pretty little beaches.
The drive to Plett took most of the day, since we’d left in the late morning, and we stopped into a grocery store just moments before it closed so we’d be able to cook dinner at the condo. We were very pleased when we arrived – the place was beautiful! And the view was unbeatable, across a golf course to an estuary and the shore. We settled in quickly and cooked a meal, enjoying our first evening with a celebratory bottle of Eikendal wine!
