Erin's South Africa Journals - 11-13-02

Today we wanted to get to Oodtshorn. It's a small town, a bit inland from the Garden Route, which is famous for its ostrich farms. We had Chris and Denise drop us off at the local minibus taxi station, then got on a pretty crowded bus to Knysna. This took about 40 minutes and was relatively cheap - 10 Rand each. From Knysna, we were referred to a car heading to George, where we'd hike to the backpacker hostel where we could catch a shuttle to our backpacker in Oodtshorn. This taxi was also pretty cheap when you consider the distance of almost 60 km - it was 15 Rand each. Then we hiked to a nearby internet cafe and caught up with emails (it's been so much HARDER this trip!!!).
Around the appointed time of 1pm, we hiked over to the George Backpacker, only to find that the shuttle was late. We waited there and had lunch, then around 2 the shuttle arrived. The driver told us the other incoming passengers on the Baz Bus were late as usual, and we'd have to wait for them till 5pm!!! We were infuriated, as we could've taxi'd there by now, and pestered the driver until he called the hostel owners and arranged another method of transport for us. Some local B&B owners were coming to George for supplies anyway, and they picked us up early at 3pm, so we arrived a full 90 minutes earlier than we would have! Sometimes it pays to be a pain!
We checked in and had a pretty nice room to ourselves. The part I liked was the good video collection, so I watched movies while Glenn got dirty outside at a dusty sand-volleyball court. Later he joined me for the hostel dinner of ostrich steak (VERY yummy!!!), and he ended up going to bed before I finished watching my 2nd movie.
