Erin's South Africa Journals - 11-19-02

Today was our journey to Port Elizabeth, where we'd fly out on our way to Perth, Australia. We'd booked the Intercape bus leaving Plettenberg to go to P.E., but it wouldn't leave until 3:30pm. Chris and Denise had to get to the airport to fly out to their safari, so they dropped us in town at 9am. With the whole day to wait, we asked them to leave us at the internet spot so we could send our engagement news to our friends & family. Also, it had been quite a while since we were able to check emails!

We spent almost 4 hours there, writing to friends and booking tickets for a flight within Australia, as well as getting Glenn's entry visa to Australia set up. By then, we were starving and went across the street to The Blue Chili restaurant, which advertised itself as Mexican food. I'm not going to rehash the horror of my experience with 'Mexican' food in Crete, but suffice it to say we were a little gunshy. But since it was so close and we were hungry, we gave it a shot. It was nothing like Mexican food, but it tasted ok and we gave the British owner a few suggestions on how to improve her chicken enchiladas!

While waiting for food (it took FOREVER!!!), Glenn and I finished up the last few postcards we had from South Africa, and I ran down the block to the post office to send them while we waited for the bill. One chore down! I also called and booked two nights at a hostel in Port Elizabeth so we'd know where to head upon arrival. Then we began the hot hike up the hill to the gas station where we'd meet the bus to Port Elizabeth, and once there enjoyed a milk shake. The bus was a half hour late arriving, which meant getting into P.E. even later than anticipated. No problem; when we arrived we called the Lungile hostel and they paid for our cab fare to their place.

This hostel wasn't all that great, but wasn't too bad either. If we'd gotten to town sooner, we might have tried to get one of the holiday flats advertising themselves along the beach, as some listed as cheaper than what we were paying for a 4-bed dorm! But with a late arrival, I just wanted to relax and go to bed. So we stayed. Tomorrow we'd do chores and take it easy.
Cango Wildlife Park also had a pair of jaguars, resting in the sun like we should have done more of!
