| Erin's South Australia Journal 12-10-02 The morning in Strathalbyn was relaxed and easy. We'd planned our next stop in Beachport, a small beachfront town only about 250 km away, so we weren't worried about getting on the road at any particular time. We took a couple of photos of the beautiful town of Strathalbyn before heading on toward the bridge over the Murray River and onwards to Beachport. As we drove, the weather started changing to not so pretty overcast skies. We went into the town of Kingston, guarded by a huge lobster named Larry, and stopped for lunch. It was nothing special, although we did check out a human sundial there (in as much as we couldn't see our shadows due to the overcast sky!!!). We continued on down the coast, arriving in Beachport around 2pm. We had planned, during our sunny morning in Strathalbyn, to take the rest of the afternoon off and enjoy the beach...but as it was too cold and windy by now to even walk around the tiny town, we decided to head on to Mt. Gambier, a larger town on the border of Victoria. Mt. Gambier was another 120 km or so, and we arrived there at almost 5pm. While checking in to a small motel, we saw a couple in front of us that Glenn recognized from the road. We got to talking and found that they are taking almost the same route through Australia as we are, up to and including the same ferry overnight to Tasmania in a week! Marcel and Eveline are from Switzerland, and traveling as a kind of honeymoon for about 6 months. We all got checked in and invited them to join us for a movie in town that night. We agreed on My Big Fat Greek Wedding and told them we'd meet them there at 8pm. This gave us a couple of hours to relax and find dinner, but we ended up wasting time in our room until almost 7:15, which made dinner a little hard to get in time for our 8pm deadline. We went to a restaurant right next door to the theater and ordered quick appetizer meals, and crammed the food down just in time. We met Marcel and Eveline in line and sat with them in the theater. The movie was hilarioius, and we were also amused by the different reactions of the crowd of Aussies watching around us. Our friends cracked up in particular at the part in the movie where the girl is asking her fiance if they couldn't just elope to Fiji! (that's what we're doing in March!) After the movie, we went back to the restaurant next door and had some beers and talked till almost midnight, then drove back to the hotel. We agreed to join them for breakfast the next morning as well. |
