Glenn's Journal for 9-18-02 - Berlin

Today was a little overcast but we hoped that the sun would come out by the afternoon. The agenda today includes going to the Berlin Zoo, a museum that we had not decided on yet, Chinese dinner near the zoo, and the Reichstag Dome to view Berlin after dark. We started the day relaxing in our room while Erin read and I worked on Journals. We bailed out of the hostel around 1:00 pm for lunch on the way to the zoo. On the way to the zoo we did stop into a DB (Deutsch Bahn) information station to determine how to get to Prague. The only way by train was through Nuremberg which by day took almost 12 hours and by night almost 16 hours. The direct train from Berlin to Prague was only 5 1/2 hours but the flooding has this section of track closed for the time being. We at least had some more information to make decisions with.

We made it to the zoo around 2:00 pm where we ended up spending almost 4 hours wandering around enjoying the different animals. We watched as they fed the elephants, checked out the rhinos, giraffes, birds, bears, and plenty of deer, elk, and moose. We spent the most time at the monkey section while enjoying the baby monkeys' play. It was a nice way to spend the afternoon in a relaxing format away from all of the hustle ad bustle of the big city. It also got Erin excited about our visit to Kenya.

After leaving the zoo we were starving. We stopped into a Chinese restaurant as planned and enjoyed a nice meal. Chinese food always provides too much food for both of us to eat but we tried our best. After dinner we made our way to the Reichstag where we entered through tight security around 9:15 pm. The view of Berlin was spectacular. It also helped that we had gone around Berlin for a few days so we understood what we were looking at or towards. After the Reichstag we headed back to the hostel for happy hour and to call it a night. We crashed around 1:00 am again. At least I did!!!
The Entrance to the Berlin Aquarium which is next door to the zoo.
