Glenn's Journal for 9-20-02 - Berlin -Dresden

Friday is a travel day to Dresden. The reason we are going to Dresden is that we have chosen to take a bus that runs from Berlin-Dresden-Prague in a scheduled 6 hours. The bus stops in Dresden overnight before continuing your way to Prague in the morning. Erin and I have decided to stay a few days to see Dresden and to catch the bus on Tuesday to Prague. The bus does not leave until 6:00 pm so we have time to do whatever in Berlin for the day.

The first things to get done on a move day are to pack up and move everything to lockers near the reception area. After completing this task and having breakfast we headed out looking for an internet cafe that we could download some pictures and journals to update the website. The day was again overcast and dreary and we were not interested in any more museums.
The first internet cafe we stopped at worked with our peripheral equipment for a half hour and could not get the USB ports to recognize the card reader. (I wanted to assist but he was not interested in the help.) He recommended another internet cafe just down the road but we found that one to be closed / out of business. We ended up back at the original internet cafe for an hour while Erin prepared front pages for Amsterdam, Berlin, and Dresden while I checked and responded to emails.

We then walked back to the hostel only to find a travel agent / internet cafe right next door to the hostel. They allowed us to use their computer to download photos and journals. Erin worked on resizing photos for the website while I wrote journals on the PDA. We did not have any luck with the journals as the computer did not have Microsoft Word loaded on it. We did manage to transfer some photos from the start of our trip though. We worked here until 5:30 pm leaving just enough time to catch a bite to eat before meeting back at the hostel for the bus.

We arrived back at the hostel around 5:50 pm and in time to meet the bus driver. A little after 6:00 pm we walked to where the bus was parked. The bus was actually a van that had seats for 7 people. Seven of us loaded our backpacks and ourselves into the van before taking off to Dresden. There were 2 brothers from New Zealand, 2 friends from Napa Valley (Ryan and Casey), and a gentleman from the Czech Republic. We chatted for the first hour of the journey before resting our heads for a little nap before arriving in Dresden. The bus dropped us off at the Hostel Mondpalast where we were booked for the night. The hostel is known for its decoration of each room to represent a country. We stayed in the Mexico room while others stayed in the Australian room, and Asian room. The hostel offered breakfast, internet, and a kitchenette. It isn't the best place that we have stayed but they are opening a new hostel next month that is around the corner and should be nicer. They also only have 2 showers for each sex that have waiting lines during the busy months. We will spend some time tomorrow checking out our options for accomodation in Dresden and on ways to get to Prague.

We went to bed around 11:30 pm as Erin was ready for a good nights sleep. The band at the bar next door kicked in around midnight but the closing of the window helped reduce the noise. We ended up getting to sleep without too much trouble, even Erin. (New pillow!!!)
